OKUN MEDIA PROFESSIONALS SYMPATHIZE WITH KOGI NUJ CORRESPONDENTS OVER ROAD ACCIDENT, DEMAND BETTER WELFARE FOR JOURNALISTS
The Okun Media Professionals, OMP, has expressed sympathy with members of the Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Correspondents’ Chapel who were involved in a road accident while on duty yesterday along Obajana – Lokoja road
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chief Olugbemi Femi and made available to newsmen in Lokoja, the group condemned the incident and described working journalists as critical stakeholders in nation-building whose safety and welfare must be prioritized.
He noted that journalists often risk their lives traveling long distances to cover events, yet they lack adequate insurance, transportation support, and medical coverage.
The group said the recent accident involving Kogi NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel members, including the Secretary General of the group, Comrade Bolu Obahopo is a painful reminder of the hazards faced by media practitioners in the course of their work.
“We commiserate with our colleagues in the Kogi NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel and pray for the quick recovery of those injured,” the statement read. “This incident underscores the urgent need for government at all levels, media owners, and stakeholders to provide more support and protection for working journalists in the country.”
The Okun Media Professionals called for improved welfare packages, regular training on safety, and provision of functional vehicles and insurance cover for journalists, especially those posted to states with poor road networks.
It also urged the NUJ and media organizations to strengthen safety protocols for reporters on field assignments to prevent future tragedies.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professionalism, safety, and the dignity of journalism practice in Nigeria.
