OPEN LETTER TO DELTA STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE,
CP AINA ADESOLA, DELTA STATE COMMAND
Alleged Extortion of ₦2.5 Million by Jesse DPO:
We Hope You Will Stay Committed to Your Promise
CP Aina Adesola,
Commissioner of Police,
Delta State Command.
Dear Sir,
I write this open letter as a concerned citizen who believes strongly in the necessity of public trust in law enforcement and the urgent need to continuously strengthen professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in Delta State.
The recent development concerning the alleged extortion of ₦2,500,000 by the Divisional Police Officer of Jesse, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, alongside two other officers — identified as Officer Bright and Officer Usman — has generated widespread public concern and deep reflection across communities in Delta State.
The matter, which came to public attention following a viral video of a distraught woman alleging that the said officers extorted the sum of ₦2.5 million from her under the promise that her brother would be released from police custody, strikes at the very heart of public confidence in the police institution.
Commendation for Your Swift Intervention
Your immediate response to this troubling allegation deserves commendation.
According to the official statement issued on Friday, 9th January 2026, by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, your office did not treat the complaint with levity. Instead, you promptly ordered the AC X-Squad to commence a full-scale investigation into the allegation.
Furthermore, the decision to detain the officer identified as Bright at the Command Headquarters and redeploy the DPO of Jesse to the Command Headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation demonstrates your commitment to transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity.
Most importantly, your acknowledgement that the redeployment of the DPO was in response to “a series of complaints of extortion and unprofessionalism from different quarters” reflects leadership that is attentive to the voices of the people.
Context of the Case
For clarity and public understanding, the Command explained that on 1st January 2026, the youth leader of Jesse community arrested some suspects and brought them to the Jesse Police Station. Among the suspects was Israel Onojeruo, 20 years old, who was arrested based on the confession of another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who claimed to have sold a gun to him.
The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation. However, while that investigation was still ongoing, the allegation that officers demanded and collected ₦2.5 million from the suspect’s family in exchange for his release has cast a dark shadow over the process.
The Larger Implications
This case is more than an isolated incident. It represents a deeper crisis that Nigerians confront daily: the struggle between lawful policing and corrupt practices that erode public trust.
When citizens begin to believe that freedom can be negotiated with cash rather than law, the foundations of justice are threatened. Your firm stance that the Delta State Command under your leadership “will not tolerate any form of extortion, intimidation, incivility, or unprofessionalism” therefore stands as a critical reassurance.
Our Hope and Expectation
Sir, we sincerely hope that this matter will not be quietly forgotten once public attention fades.
We hope that the investigation by the X-Squad will be thorough, transparent, and free from internal interference. We also hope that if the officers are found culpable, the disciplinary measures promised — in line with the Police Act and regulations — will be fully implemented to serve as a strong deterrent to others.
Only consistent accountability can restore public confidence.
A Call for Sustained Reform
Your decision to openly provide the public with the Command’s Complaint Response Unit numbers —
09011112311, 09155570008, 09064308018, 09066575187 — is a powerful step toward community policing and citizen participation. We encourage the Command to further strengthen this platform and protect whistleblowers from intimidation or reprisal.
Conclusion
The Hon Commissioner Sir, history will not judge law enforcement by words alone, but by sustained action. Delta State is watching. Nigerians are watching. And future generations will look back on moments like this as defining tests of leadership.
We acknowledge your prompt action.
We applaud your stated commitment.
But most of all, we hope you will stay faithful to your promise.
May this case become a turning point toward deeper reform, restored trust, and a police force that truly reflects the ideals of service, justice, and integrity.
Respectfully,
Wilson Enameguolor Macaulay
