The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed a deadly bomb explosion along the Dansadau–Magami highway, an incident that claimed the lives of several travelers and caused damage to vehicles in the area.
According to the police, the explosion occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2025, near Maikogo village in Maru Local Government Area of the state. The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar.
DSP Abubakar explained that the command received a distress report through the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Magami, alerting authorities to a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) that had been planted by unknown persons and later detonated on the busy roadway.
“Preliminary information from the Officer in Charge of Magami Division indicates that a suspected explosive device, planted by unidentified individuals, detonated along the Magami–Dansadau road,” the statement said.
The explosion reportedly destroyed a vehicle conveying passengers and also affected a motorcycle that was close to the scene at the time of the blast. Although casualties were recorded, the police said the exact number of those killed or injured was yet to be officially determined as of the time of filing this report.
Security operatives were immediately deployed to the area to secure the scene, prevent further danger, and commence search-and-rescue efforts. The police said investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the damage, identify the perpetrators, and determine the motive behind the attack.
Specialized units and other relevant security agencies have also been mobilized to support the investigation and ensure the safety of residents and commuters using the route.
The police command urged members of the public to remain calm but vigilant, advising travelers to exercise caution, especially on rural roads. Residents were also encouraged to report any suspicious movements or objects to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
“We assure the public that the command is fully committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this incident and bringing those responsible to justice,” DSP Abubakar said, adding that the police would continue to update the public as more information becomes available.
The Dansadau–Magami axis has, in recent years, witnessed security challenges linked to criminal activities, prompting renewed calls for strengthened surveillance and community cooperation to improve safety across the state.
