The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that five people were killed and 35 others injured following a bomb blast at a mosque in Maiduguri on Wednesday evening.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred in the Gamborun area of the state capital and was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated by a suspected suicide bomber.
Confirming the development in an interview with NAN in Maiduguri, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Borno Command, DSP Nahum Daso, said the explosion happened at about 6:15 p.m. during congregational prayers.
According to him, the attacker gained access to the vicinity of the mosque before detonating the device, resulting in immediate casualties.
“Five persons died on the spot, while 35 others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Daso said.
He explained that security operatives and emergency responders were swiftly mobilised to the scene, where the injured victims were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for urgent medical attention.
Daso added that operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, working alongside other security agencies, conducted a thorough sweep of the area to rule out the presence of secondary explosive devices.
“The area was cordoned off to ensure public safety while investigations commenced,” he said.
Residents of the Gamborun community described moments of panic following the blast, as worshippers and nearby residents fled the area. Security patrols were immediately intensified around places of worship and key public locations across Maiduguri to prevent further incidents.
The police spokesperson urged members of the public to remain calm but vigilant, calling on residents to cooperate with security agencies.
“We advise residents to promptly report any suspicious persons, movements or objects to the nearest security formation,” Daso said.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the attack and bring them to justice, while security measures across the city have been reinforced to protect lives and property.
