THE MAN SMART ADEYEMI THAT I KNOW BY
DR. OLORUNGBEMI SIMEON TOYIN
The Emergence of a Grassroots Political Mobiliser
The story of Smart Adeyemi is deeply rooted in the political realities of ordinary people. Before becoming a nationally recognised political figure, he had already cultivated a strong relationship with the grassroots through constant interaction with market women, artisans, students, transport workers and rural dwellers whose voices were often ignored within the larger political structure. His rise was not built around elite political inheritance alone, but around deliberate engagement with the common people who saw in him a man willing to identify with their struggles and aspirations.
One major factor that distinguished Smart Adeyemi from many politicians of his generation was his ability to communicate in the language of the people. He possessed a populist style that resonated with local communities, especially in Kogi West, where political mobilisation depended heavily on personal connection, accessibility and trust. He understood the political psychology of the grassroots and utilised this understanding to build a loyal support base that transcended party affiliations and ethnic divisions.
His emergence as a grassroots political mobiliser was further strengthened by his background in journalism and union activism. As a former president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, he had already developed organisational experience, negotiation skills, and national visibility before venturing fully into partisan politics. These experiences exposed him to the realities of governance, public opinion, and political advocacy, thereby equipping him with the capacity to engage effectively with people at all levels of society.
At a time when many politicians relied heavily on political godfathers and financial influence, Smart Adeyemi adopted a more people-oriented approach. He invested significant attention in community meetings, political consultations, and direct interactions with local stakeholders. This style of politics gradually earned him the reputation of being a politician who could easily identify with the plight of the masses rather than one who remained distant from them after elections.
Another defining feature of his grassroots appeal was his resilience during difficult political moments. Even in periods of electoral setbacks and intense political opposition, he maintained regular contact with his supporters and continued to project himself as a defender of their interests. This persistence helped to sustain his political relevance and strengthened the emotional bond many supporters had with him across different communities.
The political environment in Kogi State also contributed significantly to his emergence. The state’s complex political structure, characterised by ethnic balancing, party rivalry, and local influence networks, required politicians who could effectively connect with the grassroots. Smart Adeyemi demonstrated a unique capacity to navigate these realities through strategic mobilisation, persuasive communication, and visible participation in community affairs. Consequently, he gradually transformed from a local political actor into a prominent political force with national recognition.
To many observers, the emergence of Smart Adeyemi as a grassroots political mobiliser reflects the enduring importance of people-centred politics in Nigeria. His political journey illustrates how sustained engagement with ordinary citizens can create long-term political relevance and influence. Whether admired or criticised, one undeniable reality remains that his political identity was largely built from the grassroots upward, making him one of the notable populist political figures to emerge from Kogi State in contemporary Nigerian politics.
