We will bring in professionalism into legislation- Assembly lawmaker Olawumi assures Kogites

The Kogi State House of Assembly has vowed to bring in professionalism in the passage of budget and it’s effective implementation in every fiscal year.

Olawumi, who is also the Chairman of the committee posited that, the committee is responsible for the approval of funds set aside in the consolidated revenue funds of the State and financial responsibilities of the State policies, programmes and services of the Government to the citizens.

According to him, the inauguration of the committee is a legislative process of commencing official activities of the committee that will engender legislative oversight, a function constitutionally reposed on the legislature as provided in section 89 and 129 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amend).

“By this provision, the committee system of the legislature serves as the engine component of the legislative process, a functional mechanism of the legislative institution for the purpose of specialized scrutiny and course of action”.

He admonished his colleagues to deploy their wealth of experience and knowledge in discharging their constitutional duty for the common good of the State and towards achieving the desire goals of the legislatures in particular.

Olawumi stated that with his wealth experience in accounting and forensic auditinh, he is very optimistic that the eight Assembly will not disappoint the people of Kogi State.

“You can see how the committee was carefully selected, right from my self being the Chairman, because I am a chattered accountant and forensic auditor. With my wealth of experience from my previous place of work which is Kogi State internal revenue service as the head of audit and investigation, I am very positive that I and my entire team will deliver for the people of Kogi State.

“So we know the nitty-gritty when it comes to facts and figures in accounting. Their is nothing the executive arm will be doing without the Assembly approval. Our constitution spell it out clearly that Executive of Government can’t spend a dime without the approval of lawmakers.

“They can’t spend from the consolidated revenue fund without our approval. In so doing want to bring in professionalism into legislation. We want to put an end to the cut and paste syndrome during budget preparation. We want to see what will add value to our money in Kogi State.

“Most of the projects that is ongoing in Kogi State we want to see that we follow it to the point of completion. We want a situation whereby what ever that has been appropriated is effectively utilized so that our constituents, Kogites can see the impact of the budget provision that we are about to begin in 2024″he stated.
