Why the need to introduce a State-specific Security Network like Amotekun in Kogi State – Olugbemi

The Chairman of Okun Media Professionals and Chairman/CEO of Michabifem Ventures Limited publisher of Democracy Newsline Newspaper and Online blog, Chief Olugbemi Femi has called on the Kogi State Government to raise above board to establish Kogi State Security Network like the Amotekun in the South West Nigeria to curb crimes and criminalities in the state.

The veteran journalist disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Lokoja, reflecting on the need for the authority to confront the menace of kidnapping, killing, banditry,  armed robbery and other crimes through a state sponsored security organization to compliment the federal agencies in the security sector.

He called on the Kogi State House of Assembly to work on the legal framework that will give legal backing to the security network to arrest, investigate and prosecute offenders within the state.

According to him introducing a state-specific security network like Amotekun in Kogi State could be beneficial for several reasons:

Addressing Security Challenges
1. Unique Security Needs: Kogi State faces distinct security challenges, including kidnapping, killings, banditry, armed robbery, and communal clashes. A state-specific security network can address these unique needs.
2. Quick Response: A local security network can respond swiftly to security breaches, reducing response times and enhancing the effectiveness of interventions.
3. Community Policing: A state-specific security network can foster community policing, leveraging local knowledge and intelligence to prevent and combat crimes.

Complementing Federal Security Efforts
1. Supporting Federal Agencies: A state-specific security network can collaborate with federal security agencies, providing additional manpower and resources to enhance security operations.
2. Filling Security Gaps: A local security network can fill gaps in federal security efforts, ensuring that no area is left unsecured.

Economic Benefits
1. Boosting Investor Confidence: A secure environment can attract investors, stimulate economic growth, and create jobs.
2. Reducing Security Costs: A state-specific security network can reduce the financial burden of security costs on the state government.

Potential Structure and Operations
1. Governance Structure: Establish a governing board to oversee the security network, comprising representatives from the state government, security agencies, and community leaders.
2. Recruitment and Training: Recruit personnel from local communities and provide training on security operations, human rights, and community policing.
3. Equipment and Logistics: Provide necessary equipment, vehicles, and logistics to support security operations.
4. Community Engagement: Foster community engagement and participation in security efforts through town hall meetings, sensitization programs, and collaboration with community leaders.

Challenges and Mitigation Strategies
1. Funding: Establish a sustainable funding mechanism, such as a special security levy or allocation from the state budget.
2. Training and Capacity Building: Provide regular training and capacity-building programs to ensure personnel are equipped to handle security challenges.
3. Community Trust: Foster trust between the security network and local communities through transparent operations, accountability, and community engagement.

In conclusion, introducing a Kogi State Security Network like Amotekun can be an effective strategy to curb crimes and criminalities in the state. By addressing unique security needs, complementing federal security efforts, and providing economic benefits, such a network can enhance security and promote development in Kogi State.
