The nation has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Jega, a distinguished public servant and devoted matriarch, whose death occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Abuja.
Her demise marks the end of a life defined by service, humility, and profound impact across both public institutions and private lives.
Hajiya Hadiza Jega, wife of renowned academic and statesman Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, was widely respected for her years of meritorious service as a Director at the National Population Commission.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was admired for her grace, compassion, and unwavering commitment to community development, particularly in areas relating to population advocacy and social welfare.
Her passing has drawn tributes from across the country, with prominent figures expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a woman many describe as both virtuous and inspiring.
Among those who have extended heartfelt condolences is Arc Aminu Dabo, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, who described the loss as “touching and heartbreaking.” In a solemn condolence message, Arc Dabo conveyed his grief and shock upon receiving the news, noting that the deceased lived a life worthy of emulation.
“I received the sad news of the passing away of your beloved wife, Hajiya Hadiza, with great shock, grief, and devastation,” he stated,
emphasizing the magnitude of the loss not only to the Jega family but to the wider Nigerian society.
Speaking on behalf of the management, staff, and students of his educational and health institutions—AD-COHST, AD-CONS, and AD-ESAC—Arc Dabo highlighted the collective sense of loss felt across these communities. He offered prayers for the repose of her soul, asking Almighty Allah to forgive her shortcomings and grant her eternal rest in Aljannatul-Firdaus.
He also prayed for strength and resilience for Prof. Jega, a former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano and ex-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, urging him and the entire family to find comfort in the legacy of kindness and service she left behind.
Hajiya Hadiza Jega’s life story remains one of dedication and quiet influence. Those who knew her recall her as a pillar of support, a nurturing mother, and a woman whose counsel and presence brought calm and clarity in moments of uncertainty.
As condolences continue to pour in, many reflect on the transient nature of life and the enduring value of good deeds. Her passing is not only a personal loss to her immediate family but also a national moment of reflection on the contributions of women who serve diligently behind the scenes.
