In the ever-dynamic landscape of Kano State politics, fresh clarifications have emerged distancing the Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin, from ongoing speculations surrounding the Kano South senatorial contest and the alleged involvement in the political ambitions of Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.
Speaking in Kano, respected political analyst Ibrahim Ado Abubakar told Democracy Newsline Newspaper that politics, by its very nature, is driven by opinion, rivalry, and at times, deliberate misinformation.
“Politics is an arena of diverse views,” he explained. “It often comes with criticism, exaggeration, and even outright falsehoods. When a person is prominent, even minor actions are misinterpreted. However, there is absolutely no connection between Senator Barau and the politics of Kano South.”
According to him, the rumors linking the Deputy Senate President to the senatorial ambition of Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum are the handiwork of individuals—particularly some media actors and political elements—who seek to destabilize unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
He warned against the spread of unverified claims, emphasizing that such narratives are often designed to serve hidden political interests rather than the truth.
The controversy intensified following allegations that Senator Barau had sponsored local government chairmen in Kano South to publicly endorse Rurum. However, multiple sources have firmly rejected these claims, stating that the Deputy Senate President has no involvement in any senatorial race within the zone.
Further independent investigations conducted by Democracy Newsline Newspaper in Kano South revealed similar sentiments. A close associate of Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila confirmed that the political tension between Senator Sumaila and Hon. Rurum is entirely independent and bears no connection to Senator Barau.
In another development, the Director General of Hon. Rurum’s campaign structure, Muhammad Kawu Rano, categorically denied knowledge of any such sponsorship.
“To the best of my knowledge, there is no such arrangement,” he stated.
“Hon. Rurum is a seasoned politician who does not rely on external sponsorship to pursue his ambitions.”
He further described the allegations against Senator Barau as baseless and driven by individuals pursuing personal agendas, adding that such actions reflect a lack of integrity and are aimed at tarnishing reputations.
Senator Barau, not being a state governor, lacks the authority to direct local government chairmen to take political positions—making the allegations even less credible.
Sources close to the Deputy Senate President reiterated that his primary focus remains peace, unity, and political stability in Kano State. He has consistently called for cooperation among political stakeholders and urged support for both the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As the political atmosphere gradually builds toward the next electoral cycle, analysts warn that misinformation could become a recurring tool. For now, however, multiple independent voices agree on one point: the claims linking Senator Barau to the Kano South senatorial contest remain unsubstantiated.
Political Actors Dismiss Claims Tying Barau to Kano South Senate Race”
Analysts and key stakeholders in Kano State politics have firmly denied allegations that Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin is involved in the Kano South senatorial contest, describing the claims as politically motivated misinformation aimed at sowing division within the APC.
