As the 2027 Kano State gubernatorial election approaches, an intense power struggle is brewing within the All Progressives Congress (APC) that could reshape the political landscape. At the center of this battle is Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, who, along with other heavyweights like former gubernatorial candidate Dr. Nasiru Yusif Gawuna, Murtala Sule Garo, A.A Zaura, Engr. Abubakar Bichi, and former Minister of State for Housing Tijjani Abdullahi Gwarzo, are all vying for the APC ticket in 2027. This unfolding saga reveals deep divisions within the party and has triggered fierce debates on who is best positioned to reclaim Kano from the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and its Governor, Engr. Abba Kabiru Yusuf.
The 2023 APC governorship standard-bearer, Dr. Nasiru Yusif Gawuna, expected to reattempt the ticket, now faces significant competition. Barau I. Jibrin is reportedly rallying forces to dislodge Gawuna, determined to become the face of the APC in Kano. Sources close to the party reveal that Barau has expressed strong intentions to assume the principal candidate role, leveraging his influence as a high-ranking party member and a steadfast APC supporter.
While Gawuna, Garo, and Zaura are reputed for their popularity within Kano APC circles, Barau’s recent moves indicate a determined bid to establish dominance, from the grassroots to the state level. Party insiders reveal Barau’s strategy may involve reorganizing party leadership by aligning local and ward-level positions with his supporters, signaling his intent to secure the nomination by reshaping the party structure to reflect his vision.
However, this shift is unsettling for many of Barau’s previous allies, including Engr. Abubakar Bichi, a known Barau confidant now also eyeing the governorship ticket. Reports suggest Bichi feels sidelined, leading to a rift that some within the party view as a betrayal of longstanding loyalties. Gawuna’s camp, too, is reportedly disillusioned, with some sources claiming that Barau’s actions appear more self-serving than party-driven. One source noted, “Barau’s insistence on leading the ticket, with no compromise, is interpreted by some as undermining unity within APC.”
Gawuna’s supporters argue that as the 2023 candidate, he is naturally positioned to continue representing APC, with a track record and constituency following. From his perspective, stepping down for a senatorial role — as some propose — would be a step back, diminishing his gubernatorial aspirations. On the other hand, Engr. Bichi and A.A Zaura have their own followings, further complicating negotiations around a unified ticket.
Barau’s backers argue that his influence, particularly in the North Senatorial District, is unrivaled and essential for the APC’s victory against the NNPP incumbent. One source highlighted Barau’s consistent dedication to the party, especially during difficult times, citing that he has personally financed various party activities, solidifying his standing as a loyal APC figure. This loyalty, they believe, justifies his claim to the governorship ticket, asserting that Barau’s widespread connections and executive experience place him in the best position to lead the charge against the NNPP.
Meanwhile, the APC leadership appears cautious, recognizing the urgency of selecting a candidate with both popular appeal and the capability to unify the party. The possibility of a ticket pairing that includes Gawuna, Garo, Zaura, or Bichi remains on the table, with discussions ongoing to balance power between regions and factions. As one party member shared, “We’re watching closely who can secure Kano for APC. The North Senatorial District is crucial, and Barau’s experience could play a pivotal role.”
As it stands, the APC in Kano finds itself at a crossroads. Should Barau secure the ticket, it would signal a reconfiguration of alliances, possibly sidelining established figures. Conversely, if the party opts to support Gawuna or another candidate, it would reflect a move towards continuity and loyalty to previous candidates.
The countdown to 2027 has begun, and the internal dynamics within Kano APC will likely shape the narrative. The ultimate decision will hinge on the ability of the party to balance experience with popular support, ensuring a formidable candidate to challenge the NNPP in Kano and ultimately reclaim the state for the APC.
