A wave of grief and outrage has swept across Nigeria following the tragic killing of innocent citizens in Edo State. Communities from Kano State, the wider Northern region, and across the country have raised their voices, urging decisive action and justice for the victims.
Among those called upon to respond was Barau I. Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, who has received numerous appeals from his constituents and concerned Nigerians nationwide. The calls reflect a shared sense of loss and a demand for accountability in the face of what many have described as a senseless and brutal act.
In his response, Senator Barau expressed deep sorrow and sympathy for the victims and their families. He strongly condemned the killings, describing them as a heinous crime against innocent people who had done nothing to deserve such a fate. He emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in a civilized society and must be confronted with the full weight of the law.
The Deputy Senate President called on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively. He urged them to track down those responsible for the atrocity and ensure that justice is served in accordance with the severity of the crime. According to him, failure to act promptly would only embolden perpetrators and deepen the climate of fear among citizens.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s diversity, Senator Barau noted that the nation is home to many ethnic groups and religions. He stressed the importance of unity, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among citizens. “We must live together in harmony,” he said, “embracing one another as brothers and sisters for the sake of our collective progress and stability.”
He also offered prayers for the victims, asking Almighty God to grant them eternal rest and admit them into paradise. He prayed for strength and patience for the bereaved families during this difficult time.
Reassuring those directly affected, Senator Barau pledged that justice would not be denied. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to book and that such acts are not allowed to go unpunished.
In a further step, he announced plans to present a formal motion before the Senate, seeking legislative attention and action on the matter. This, he said, is part of a broader effort to prevent future occurrences and to reinforce the rule of law.
As the nation mourns, the call for justice continues to grow louder—echoing a collective demand that such tragedies must never be allowed to recur.
