National Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Sokubo Sokubo, has commended Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State for his commitment to a democratic process in the selection of the Youth Council leadership.
In addition to facilitating a transparent election, Governor Otu has been praised for nurturing an environment conducive for the council’s activities.
Comrade Sokubo’s remarks came at the conclusion of the electoral proceedings in Calabar, which spanned three days and culminated in a free and fair election that saw Comrade Emmanuel Olayi elected as the Cross State Chairman NYCN.
“We extend our utmost gratitude to the Governor, His Excellency Bassey Otu, for his spirit of sportsmanship and for allowing a transparent process without state interference,” Sokubo said.
The elections, held at the Calabar UJ Esuene Sports Stadium, were attended by the leadership of the NYCN, representatives from the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiative, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Cross River State, and numerous other observers.
Among the notable attendees was Barr Ekpenyong Akiba, Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties. He praised the council for maintaining peace and fairness throughout the electoral process, in line with the NYCN constitution. “We are very proud of our council for the level of maturity they have demonstrated in electing the new state leadership,” Barr Akiba said.
He added, “Our role as government, as directed by our champion of democracy, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, was to create an enabling environment for the youths to express themselves in an uninterrupted democratic process and choose the leadership they want.”
Barr Akiba also lauded Governor Otu for his continued support of the youth council, including a recent increase in the state government’s subvention to the body. He noted that with a positive approach to community issues, the Governor would continue to provide substantial support to the council.
The elections resulted in an equitable distribution of key positions across the three senatorial districts, adhering to the NYCN constitution. Comrade Emmanuel Olayi was elected State Chairman from the Northern Senatorial District, Comrade Ngban Basil as State Deputy Chairman from the Central Senatorial District, and Prince Ojoi as State Secretary from the Southern Senatorial District.
