A Kano State High Court has affirmed the suspension of the embattled State Chairman of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), Hashimu Suleiman-Dungurawa, in a development that has further reshaped the internal political landscape of the ruling party in the state.
Delivering an interim ruling on Friday, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf ordered that Suleiman-Dungurawa be suspended from office pending the determination of a substantive suit filed before the court. The ruling followed a motion ex parte brought by Mr. Shuaibu Hassan and nine other applicants, all members of the NNPP from Gargari Ward in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.
Suleiman-Dungurawa, who also hails from Gargari Ward, was named as the first respondent in the suit alongside the NNPP as the second respondent.
The legal battle arose from the suspension of Suleiman-Dungurawa on Dec. 30, 2025, after 27 members of the State Executive Committee of the NNPP reportedly passed a resolution endorsing disciplinary action against him. The party leadership accused him of acts considered inimical to party unity and discipline.
According to court documents, the applicants alleged that the suspended chairman had repeatedly denigrated the office of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, a key figure within the NNPP, thereby sowing discord among party members. They also accused him of failing to meet his financial obligations to the party, including the non-payment of dues.
Through their counsel, Mr. K. Njidda and Mr. S. A. Muhammad, the applicants urged the court to uphold the disciplinary process that led to the suspension. They further requested the court to determine whether the action taken against Suleiman-Dungurawa was in strict compliance with the provisions of the NNPP constitution.
In her ruling on the ex parte application, Justice Yusuf granted the reliefs sought by the applicants. She issued an interim order restraining Suleiman-Dungurawa from parading himself or functioning as the Kano State Chairman of the NNPP pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
“It is hereby ordered that the suspension of the first respondent on Dec. 30, 2025, shall be maintained pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice,” the judge ruled.
Justice Yusuf also directed that all court processes be duly served on the respondents and ordered all parties to maintain the status quo. The case was adjourned to Jan. 19, 2026, for the hearing of the substantive suit.
Meanwhile, the NNPP State Executive Committee has moved swiftly to fill the leadership vacuum created by the suspension.
The committee has affirmed the nomination of Hon.Abdullahi Zubairu-Abiya as the Acting Chairman of the party in Kano State.
Confirming the development, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, Mr. Yusuf Mukhtar, said the appointment was made in accordance with the provisions of the NNPP constitution. He stressed that the party was committed to due process and internal democracy, adding that the leadership transition was necessary to ensure stability and continuity ahead of future political engagements.
The unfolding legal and political drama is being closely watched by party members and political observers alike, as it is expected to have significant implications for the NNPP’s cohesion and strategy in Kano State.
