FG Flags Off 200MW Solar Plant for Abuja Steel Mills in Niger State
_Audu, Bago, Tegbe, Enoh say project will cut power costs, boost industrialisation_
The federal government on Saturday flagged off construction of a 200 Megawatts solar power plant for Abuja Steel Mills Limited, with Minister of Steel Development Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu leading other top officials to perform the groundbreaking and hand over 500 hectares of land in Dikko Community, Niger State.
The project, to be executed by African Industries Group, AIG, is billed as the largest solar-powered industrial energy project in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is expected to provide dedicated electricity for Abuja Steel Mills and support its future expansion.
Speaking at the ceremony on June 20, Prince Audu said the plant is a major milestone under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “This project represents another significant milestone in the realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at attracting Foreign Direct Investments, boosting local production, and growing Nigeria’s GDP to $1 trillion by 2030,” he stated.
The minister commended Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for allocating 500 hectares for the facility, describing it as “a bold decision that will project Niger State as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrialisation drive.” He stressed that power and steel are key drivers of Nigeria’s industrialisation and economic transformation.
Governor Bago thanked AIG for choosing Niger State and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to private sector-led investments.
“The project is a clear testament to what government and the private sector can achieve together for national development,” he said.
He urged the Dikko host community to protect the facility as a national asset and called on AIG to prioritise employment for local residents.
Minister of Power, Mr Joseph Tegbe, described the governor’s land allocation as “industrial statesmanship” and a “bold and visionary decision” that will position Niger at the heart of Nigeria’s industrialisation ecosystem.
Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh, highlighted the collaboration between power, steel and industry ministries. He said the event underscored the importance of inter-ministerial synergy for sustainable national development and commended AIG for driving the partnership.
Group Chairman of African Industries Group, Mr Raj Gupta, called the occasion “historic,” noting the company’s over five decades of operations in Nigeria have focused on development, empowerment and industrial growth.
Abuja Steel Mills Limited is a subsidiary of AIG. Industry operators say inconsistent power supply has been a major constraint on Nigeria’s steel output and competitiveness.
The 200MW solar plant is expected to reduce production costs and improve output once completed.
