For Justice: The Continued Detention of DCP Abba Kyari Is a National Injustice.

The. National Youth Chambers Council of Nigeria ( NYCCN) , in strong alliance with the Coalition of All Nigerian Youth Chambers and other civil society organizations across the nation, is compelled to raise a solemn appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation regarding the continued detention and prosecution of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari.
It is with deep concern and a heavy heart that we observe the prolonged legal entanglement of a man who once stood as a symbol of dedication, courage, and commitment in the face of Nigeria’s most dangerous criminal elements. While the nation has recently witnessed presidential pardons extended to convicted drug traffickers, fraudsters, kidnappers, and bandits—many of whom were brought to justice by the very efforts of DCP Kyari and his team—it becomes morally indefensible and legally questionable to continue the persecution of a decorated officer whose only “offense” was his unwavering resolve to restore law and order.
The Paradox of Pardon and Prosecution
The act of extending presidential clemency to individuals with proven records of endangering public safety, while detaining a man who fought those very elements, raises troubling questions about the integrity and consistency of our justice system. If notorious criminals are deemed worthy of forgiveness and reintegration into society, what then becomes of justice when a committed officer like Abba Kyari remains behind bars?
This inconsistency does not merely offend the conscience of fair-minded Nigerians—it undermines public trust in the rule of law. The selective application of justice sends a dangerous message to our law enforcement community: that sacrifice, patriotism, and success in the fight against crime may not guarantee fairness or protection under the law.
A Hero, Not a Villain
DCP Abba Kyari has risked his life in service to Nigeria, leading high-risk operations against some of the most dangerous criminal syndicates across the country. He has been widely celebrated for his tireless efforts in restoring public order, and his professional accomplishments are a matter of public record. To see such a man languish in detention—while the very criminals he apprehended enjoy state mercy—amounts to a grave institutional betrayal.
The current proceedings against him are not only unjust, they set a disturbing precedent that discourages honest, hardworking officers from committing fully to the cause of justice. Justice must not be reserved for the guilty while punishment is meted out to the righteous.
Our Humble Appeal to the President
In the spirit of national unity, healing, and reconciliation, we respectfully urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation to review and discontinue all legal actions against DCP Abba Kyari, and to ensure his immediate release.
This call is not borne out of sentiment, but of fairness and principle. Our organizations—representing thousands of patriotic youths and community stakeholders—believe firmly that continuing to prosecute DCP Kyari while pardoning convicted criminals is an injustice that offends both legal sense and national conscience.
Let it be known that the National Youth Chambers Council of Nigeria ( NYCCN) and its affiliate groups will not take to the streets to demand his release. We are committed to peaceful dialogue, lawful appeal, and respectful engagement with constituted authority. But we must also make it clear: Justice must be seen to be done.
Conclusion
The integrity of our nation’s justice system rests on its consistency and fairness. It must not appear to reward criminality while punishing patriotism. DCP Abba Kyari deserves the same consideration extended to those whose crimes were far greater. Anything less would not only be a travesty of justice, but a message to the next generation of officers that Nigeria does not stand by those who stand for her.
We therefore, once again, call on the President and the Attorney-General to act in the interest of justice, equity, and national stability. Release DCP Abba Kyari now.
