General Emma Satu Calls for Greater Inclusion of Women in National Development

Ahiaba Douglas, Abuja

The Convener of the Niger Delta Ex-agitators Forum, General Emma Satu, has called for greater inclusion and active participation of Nigerian women in the socio-political and economic affairs of the nation.

According to the ex-agitator, women should not only participate actively in politics but should also be involved in the decision-making process at all levels of government.

General Satu made the call while delivering a speech and goodwill message at the All Women Inter-States Debate held in Abuja. The event was organized by the African Mothers Initiative to promote the intellectual capacity of women for political participation. The debate was themed, “Family Inclusion in National Development, Financial Economy and Community Security.”

He said women play significant roles in the life of every nation as builders of families and communities. According to him, mothers instill values, discourage violence, and raise responsible children who later become leaders in society.

“The character and values of a nation’s leadership are a reflection of the family,” he said.

General Satu noted that women are often the first to notice signs of radicalization, violence, drug addiction, substance abuse, and other forms of criminal behavior among young people. He stressed that women should not only participate in politics but should also be entrusted with decision-making responsibilities where they can influence policies on education, healthcare, security, and other critical sectors that directly affect the lives of citizens.

He further stated that when women are included in the governance process, communities tend to experience greater social cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and effective conflict resolution. He described the All Women Inter-States Debate as timely and commendable, noting that it provides a platform for amplifying women’s voices in national development.

Speaking further, General Satu emphasized that the protection of lives and property should not be left solely to the government and security agencies. He called for collective efforts by citizens, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to address the security challenges confronting communities and the nation at large.

The self-styled General also advocated the use of technology, intelligence gathering, community policing, strengthened surveillance systems, and enhanced cooperation between local communities and security agencies as effective strategies for improving security across the country.

However, he advised that while implementing these security measures, authorities must ensure that the fundamental rights of citizens are respected and protected.
