The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria, has called on leaders, policymakers, and communities to take action and provide women and young girls with the opportunities and support they deserve.
The organization made this appeal in a statement its Senior Advocacy and Marketing Manager, Mr Steve Aborishade made available to Journalists on Sunday in Lokoja. to mark the International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated on March 8, 2026.
This year, AHF Nigeria joins the global movement to demand an end to the inequities that hold women and girls back with an IWD commemoration on March 9, across all AHF Nigeria states (Abuja-FCT, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Nasarawa state).
AHF Nigeria highlighted the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa, where they account for over 60% of new infections.
The organization emphasized that gender-based violence, limited access to healthcare, and reproductive rights restrictions continue to hinder the progress of women and girls.
“When women thrive, we all rise,” AHF Nigeria said, emphasizing the need for collective action to break down barriers to health, equality, and opportunity.
To mark IWD 2026, AHF Nigeria will host a Continuous Medical Education (CME) for health workers in over 156 healthcare facilities across seven states in Nigeria, focusing on the gendered correlation of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and ways to support women, particularly those in rural communities.
AHF Nigeria Country Program Director (CPD), Dr. Echey Ijezie, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to prioritizing issues affecting women and young girls, saying, “We will continue to advocate for policies that protect and uplift them worldwide.
“The organization is dedicated to ensuring every woman and girl leads a healthy, empowered life”.
The AHF urged international community to turn commitments into action, embracing the “Give To Gain” principle, which emphasizes the power of reciprocity and support in empowering women and girls.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global non-profit organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to more than 2.8 million people in 50 countries worldwide in Africa, the Americas, the Asia/Pacific Region, and Europe.
