How Plateau Rich Cultural Heritage is Fast Eroding with Child Prostitution and Trafficking
By Peter Azi – Jos
The Tin City of Jos, a revered home of peace and tourism, is fast becoming a safe haven for merchants and bad elements pushing teenagers into prostitution and trafficking. This menace, once happening far away, is now at the doorsteps of Plateau State residents.
Child prostitution, a form of commercial sexual exploitation involving minors, is rearing its ugly head in the state, alien to Plateau’s cultural heritage.
The state government, through PLASGEOC, has rescued numerous children, including 16 from Anambra State and 39 from Abuja.
On December 2, 2024, Police dismantled a syndicate in Bukuru, rescuing five children aged 2-5. Pastor Dayo Benard and accomplices were arrested for deceiving parents into handing over their children.
The state government, with security agencies, raided brothels in Bukuru, rescuing young girls (11-17 years), including those with disabilities, a breastfeeding mother, and a pregnant woman.
Hon. Barr. Philemon Daffi, Chairman of the Task Force, blamed the situation on poverty, insecurity, broken homes, and irresponsible parenting, calling for collective action to curb the menace.
The National Industrial Court must try suspects responsibly to restore Plateau’s lost glory.
