The Honourable Minister for Regional Development, Hon. Engr. Abubakar Momoh, has emphasized the vital role of independent media in Nigeria’s democratic system.
Speaking at the 15th Annual Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony organized by Democracy Newsline Newspaper, held at the National Merit House, Maitama, Abuja, the Minister highlighted the media’s watchdog role in informing citizens, exposing corruption, and promoting public debate on issues of transparency and participation.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Project Monitoring Southeast and Southwest Zones, Hon. Chief Wole Iroaye, the Minister stressed the critical role of the media in informing citizens about government policies and aiding decision-making.
He further noted that a responsible media can foster friendship, support democratization, and enhance civic culture.
The Minister, who was honored with the Distinguished Leadership Award at the event, emphasized the importance of the media in promoting democratic values and good governance.
He pointed out that when citizens participate truthfully, honestly, and transparently in the democratic process, democracy can thrive, and good governance can be achieved.
However, he noted that when democracy is abused, good governance becomes scarce, and the desires of the people are jeopardized.
In an interview with journalists, the Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of Democracy Newsline Newspaper, Chief Olugbemi Femi, highlighted the challenges facing the media in Nigeria.
He stated that many people do not believe that a media organization can be profitable without connections or patronage from government, corporate organizations, or individuals.
Despite these challenges, Chief Femi said that Democracy Newsline Newspaper has remained determined to contribute its quota to the overall development of the country, and has weathered the storm for 15 years.
The Chairman of the occasion, Professor Emeritus Olu Obafemi, noted that individuals who devote their time to social and political reconstruction through journalism are nation builders.
He said their work is essential to promoting democratic values, good governance, and civic culture. As such, society should encourage and support these efforts.
Professor Obafemi said that the media plays a vital role in promoting democracy and good governance in Nigeria, added that despite the challenges they face, a responsible and independent media can foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and civic participation.
