Jos Jarawa Councillor, Hon. Stephen Izang Appreciate Constituents For Mandate
Hon. Stephen Izang Atsi, is the Councillor, Representing Jos Jarawa ward in Jos North Local Government Area.
He fielded Questions from Democracy Newsline on the success es he has recorded as a parliamentarian at the grassroot Level.
He started with Appreciating God for enabling him to represent his people.
I give God the glory for finding myself among the 7th Assembly of Jos North L.G.C. let also show my gratitude to my good people of Jos Jarawa ward,For electing me overwhelmingly to represent them.
We were elected last year in October and we have assumed office fully for about 4 Months now and no more time for politics but rather is time for Governance, law making and representation,so far so good,we have received a training as Legislators and after then,we resumed office and faced with numerous challenges which include lack of a befitting Legislative Chambers and other basic infrastructures because the previous government in Jos North failed and you know government is a continues process and we have since swung into Action. Within 60 days in office,we addressed the issue of water scarcity that is prevalent in our communities. We were able to fixed two boreholes each in all the 20 wards of the locality and ours is in Ishong Agwom and Angwan Musa Iki in Jos Jarawa district.
Another second achievement we recorded is the Renovation of a befitting Legislative Chambers and before now,we were using the Chairman’s Chamber and today,we are using our Chamber and is one of the best in Plateau state.
Another feat we recorded within this shortest time is the revamping of the ICT centre that will stand the test of time and again,we have successfully passed appropriation bill into Law and had since been signed by the chairman.
As part of my community engagements and interventions,we were able to fixed an overhead tank at Ata-atar and it was drilled by member representing Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency.
Now I chaired the House Committee on works and under my supervision,we were able to renovate the Council’s gate and it has given the council a new leaf and is now wearing a new look entirely there’s also ongoing market construction in Angwan Rukuba and we give thanks to the Chairman for the bold steps taking so far and initiate such a laudable project,he is a pragmatic young man with full of experience and is doing what he wants as elected for and as humans,we need more ,and we will continue to legislate and create more conducive environment for the chairman to do more.
As Legislators,we are also revamping our Primary education,we oversight and discovered that we have over 300 Librarians in our 61 Primary schools in Jos North Local Government Area and when the Education Secretary came for budget defense,he decried inadequate teachers in those schools,we then resolved that since those Primary schools lack functional libraries,we need one librarian in each school and mandated the remaining ones to enroll in school and acquire the prerequisite Knowledge to teach.
The schools are also facing a lot of challenges such as lack of water, toilet facilities among others and we are not resting on our oars to mitigate such problems.
We have also been ensuring that we make positive laws as a member of house committee on rules and businesses,we are making the proper procedures for quality laws.
One of the notable law we have successfully passed also is the Revenue law and we did that with the Plateau state Revenue services. What we did was to harmonized with them and to avoid multiple revenue collections, they will be giving us a percentage as a local Government,we have discovered fake receipts by tricycle operators particularly,in British and Yantaya,I moved the motion in one of our plenaries and the matter has been referred to the committee on revenue to carry out proper investigation and block the leakages.
The Councillor spoke further on community engagements and interactions as a result of the local Government autonomy, people are demanding and having higher expectations from us while the autonomy is yet to start but then,I have been trying my best to meet up with the expectations and yearning of our people,
Among these,I have registered about 16 candidates for JAMB in partnership with peace house and my desire is to add the number to 20.
I will engaged my constituents in a town hall meeting soon and show my gratitude to them and also explain to them what we have achieved so far and listen to their needs and suggestions.
I was able to include in the budget Road from Owen Printing centre in Arin Izang ward to St Peters Furaka, solar street lights,,boreholes, Primary Health cares in Nukpis and Ishong Agwom,a road from Suleman Tech to Angwan Bala Kaze, popularly known as Angwan Miango.
By God’s grace, such projects will be executed.
