Tudun Wada, Kano State — Tension continues to rise in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State as Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Member representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency at the House of Representatives, raises alarm over what he describes as “persistent, targeted attacks” against members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the region.
The latest of such incidents occurred on Thursday, August 28, when suspected political thugs reportedly stormed Tasarrufi General Enterprise, a local factory employing dozens of youths in the area. Eyewitnesses said the attackers came in a convoy of vehicles and unleashed violence on factory workers, injuring several and causing widespread panic. The facility, which serves as a major source of livelihood for many residents, remains partially shut as a result of the assault.
Hon. Doguwa, a prominent figure in Kano politics and former Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, alleged that the attack was orchestrated by individuals loyal to the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) under the supervision of the Tudun Wada Local Government Chairman, who was reportedly present during a demolition exercise that turned violent.
> “What we witnessed was nothing short of a barbaric attack on our people and our party structures,” Doguwa said during a press briefing in Kano. “This was organised and perpetuated under the direct supervision of the Local Government Chairman. This lawlessness cannot and must not be tolerated.”
He added that among those severely affected was the APC Chairman in Tudun Wada, Alhaji Suyudi Umar, who sustained injuries while reportedly trying to protect party property during the clash.
Doguwa drew a sharp line between the current events and his ongoing rivalry with the NNPP, dating back to the 2023 general elections, when he was accused of murder following a controversial electoral incident. The lawmaker was eventually exonerated by two separate Federal High Court rulings—in Abuja and Kano—which not only cleared his name but also awarded N25 million in damages against the Kano State Government for what the courts termed “politically motivated defamation.”
> “Let it be on record that I am a law-abiding citizen who has faced political victimization at the highest level. If the court could vindicate me in such a serious matter, then I will not sit back and watch my people and my party be subjected to further intimidation and violence,” Doguwa said.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed that it had received a formal complaint regarding the August 28 incident. Speaking to Democracy Newsline, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said:
> “There is a formal complaint against the ALGON (Association of Local Governments of Nigeria) Chairperson for Tudun Wada. All relevant parties — including witnesses and the suspect — have been invited. The orderly to the Chairman has also been recalled to the command for questioning.”
Residents of Tudun Wada have expressed mixed reactions to the unfolding situation. While supporters of the APC see the attacks as a “coordinated attempt to silence the opposition”, others sympathetic to the NNPP claim that the altercations stem from land disputes and the enforcement of urban planning regulations—not politics.
However, some civil society groups have urged both parties to de-escalate tensions and allow law enforcement to handle the matter without political interference.
As investigations continue, political observers in Kano warn that unless the issue is swiftly and transparently addressed, it could spiral into a full-blown political crisis ahead of local government elections scheduled for early next year.
