In a landmark operation, the Kano State Police Command has dismantled a notorious fraud syndicate and seized counterfeit currencies amounting to an unprecedented N129,542,823,000.00. This breakthrough operation underscores the unwavering commitment of the police to safeguarding public trust and tackling financial crimes.
Three suspects have been apprehended including
Nura Ibrahim (26) of Sharada Quarters,
Mohammed Muktar (35) of Hotoro Quarters, and
Ahmad Abdullahi (30) from Kaga Local Government Area, Borno State.
The arrests were made after a vigilant member of the public tipped off the police, triggering a well-coordinated investigation.
Police investigations revealed that Ahmad Abdullahi, the alleged mastermind, had relocated from Borno State to Kano’s Hotoro Quarters to establish and expand the syndicate’s operations. The group specialized in producing and circulating counterfeit currencies, causing financial losses and undermining public confidence in the local economy.
The breakthrough began on December 1, 2024, with the arrest of Nura Ibrahim. His confession paved the way for the capture of Mohammed Muktar and ultimately, Ahmad Abdullahi. The arrests were carried out at different locations across Kano.
The operation yielded fake currencies totaling N129.5 trillion, including:
$3,366,000 (USD)
CFA 51,970,000 and
N1,443,000 (Naira)
The operation was spearheaded by the Gwale Division team under the direction of SP Abdurrahim Adamu, and supervised by CP Salman Dogo Garba, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State. CP Garba commended the officers for their diligence and professionalism in dismantling the high-profile syndicate.
The suspects are currently in police custody and face multiple charges related to counterfeiting and fraud once investigations are concluded. The police have assured the public of their ongoing efforts to rid Kano State of criminal activities and protect its residents from financial exploitation.
The Kano State Police Command has lauded the vigilance of the whistleblower whose timely information enabled this significant bust. SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command’s spokesperson, called on the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer society.
This monumental operation not only sends a strong message to criminals but also highlights the importance of community-police collaboration in combating crime.
