One Year After: PANDEF Pays Glowing Tribute to Late Chief E.K. Clark
By Uche Benbor
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has paid a glowing tribute to elder statesman and Niger Delta leader, Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, one year after his passing, describing his legacy as enduring and his impact on Nigeria’s socio-political development as monumental.
In a solemn remembrance message issued on Monday, PANDEF leadership said the late nationalist, lawyer, and former Federal Commissioner for Information remained an irreplaceable voice of justice, equity, and development for the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.
The group noted that although one year has passed since his transition, Clark’s ideals, courage, and unwavering commitment to national unity and regional development continue to inspire generations of leaders and citizens.
A Towering Voice for the Niger Delta
PANDEF described the late Clark as a father figure whose leadership shaped the struggle for resource control, environmental justice, and infrastructural development in the Niger Delta region.
According to the statement, the elder statesman dedicated his life to defending the rights of marginalized communities, championing fairness in governance, and promoting peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic nationalities.
“Chief Clark was more than a leader; he was a national conscience whose voice resonated with truth, courage, and patriotism. His commitment to justice and equity remains a guiding light for PANDEF and the entire Niger Delta,” the group said.
The forum emphasized that Clark’s contributions to national discourse, constitutional development, and advocacy for restructuring significantly influenced policy direction and strengthened democratic values in Nigeria.
Legacy of Courage and Statesmanship
PANDEF further described the late nationalist as a fearless advocate who spoke truth to power and consistently defended the interests of the Niger Delta people throughout decades of public service.
The group recalled his role in fostering dialogue between the Federal Government and stakeholders in the oil-rich region, noting that his interventions helped stabilize tensions and promote sustainable development initiatives.
It stressed that Clark’s leadership transcended regional politics, as he remained deeply committed to national unity, peace, and progress.
“His life symbolized selfless service, integrity, and dedication to humanity. Nigeria has lost a rare patriot, but his legacy of courage and sacrifice will forever endure,” PANDEF added.
Call to Sustain His Vision
The organization called on political leaders, youth groups, and stakeholders in the Niger Delta to sustain the vision and principles championed by the late elder statesman by promoting justice, good governance, and inclusive development.
PANDEF also urged Nigerians to honour Clark’s memory by embracing dialogue, peaceful engagement, and policies that advance national cohesion.
The forum noted that the most meaningful tribute to the late leader would be the collective commitment to building a just and equitable society — ideals he consistently advocated during his lifetime.
A Life Worth Celebrating
Born into a distinguished career in public service, Chief Clark served Nigeria in several capacities, including as a federal commissioner and prominent voice in national affairs. His influence spanned decades, earning him recognition as one of the most respected leaders from the Niger Delta.
PANDEF concluded that though the elder statesman is no longer physically present, his legacy remains deeply rooted in the nation’s political and developmental history.
“As we remember him one year after, we celebrate a life of honour, service, and unwavering dedication to the Nigerian project. His presence may be gone, but his spirit remains mighty,” the statement said.
