Opposition Parties Urged to Prioritize Electability Over Primaries Ahead of 2027 Polls

As Nigeria approaches another critical moment in its democratic journey the 2027 General Elections, the Coalition of Opposition Parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other progressive blocs, has been urged to shift focus from internal power struggles to the broader electoral reality.

According to the North Central Spokesperson of the Obidient Movement, Comrade Emmanuel Idakwo, the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on presenting a candidate who commands the trust and confidence of the electorate, not just one who can manipulate primaries through money politics.

He stressed that Nigeria’s youth—the most vibrant and productive segment of society—have long been sidelined but are now more politically conscious than ever. “This awakening is not driven by patronage or tribal loyalty, but by a common desire for competent, credible, and compassionate leadership,” Idakwo noted.

He argued that among all opposition figures, former presidential candidate Peter Obi stands out as the only leader who resonates with this generation. “His message of transparency, frugality, and people-centered governance has united Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional divides,” he said.

Citing Obi’s 2023 performance, where he secured over six million votes despite joining the race late and without the backing of political godfathers, Idakwo maintained that Obi has demonstrated unmatched grassroots appeal. “Let us not forget: the only candidate who defeated President Tinubu in Lagos—his own political stronghold—was Peter Obi. That symbolic victory speaks volumes,” he emphasized.

Idakwo further recalled the 2015 elections, where Bola Ahmed Tinubu supported Muhammadu Buhari, not because Buhari could win a primary, but because he had national appeal. “That same political wisdom must guide the opposition today. The question should not be who can win the primaries, but who can win Nigeria,” he stated.

He warned that failure to recognize the people’s choice could cost the opposition another opportunity to change the country’s direction. “Nigerians will not be swayed by convention halls and stage-managed primaries. They will follow the one who has walked with them, spoken to their pain, and restored their hope. That person is Peter Obi,” he declared.

The statement concluded with a rallying call: “Peter Obi is not just a candidate; he is a movement, the consensus of the people. A new Nigeria is POssible, and we invite all progressive forces to unite before it is too late.”
