PEPSA, NESREA Partner to Avert Looming Health Hazard in Jos
By Peter Azi – Jos
Residents of Jos metropolis can heave a sigh of relief following collaboration between the Plateau State Environmental and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to promote hygiene and safety standards among citizens.
The Director General of PEPSA, Samuel Dapiya, stated this in Jos after the monthly sanitation exercise for May.
The sanitation exercise was observed under strict restriction of movement as part of the agency’s core mandate of waste management and house-to-house sanitation inspection.
The task force visited Angwan Yashi, Tudun Wada community in Jos North Local Government Area, where one household was found to have about 50 tenants sharing only four toilets.
The DG described the situation as hazardous and a recipe for disaster. “There will be a follow-up on Monday to ensure evacuation of the toilets and further action,” he said.
For more than an hour, the team also visited other households as well as local joints where local beer is brewed and sold.
Inspections, advocacy, and awareness were adopted as the approach for all residents, who listened with rapt attention and promised to keep their environment clean. The task force was made up of PEPSA officials, NESREA personnel, security operatives, magistrates, and journalists.
The General Manager said the agency deliberately switched focus and paid close attention to household sanitation because “we are interested in the well-being of our people and the quality of toilet facilities around them. We need to come in where necessary to evacuate some of them.”
“We have been partnering with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), and the partnership and collaboration in driving the initiative of the agency is massive,” Dapiya added.
He further reiterated that people should own sanitation starting from their home front. “If you teach your children, they will grow with that culture and habit of clean hygiene,” he said.
He called on the people of Plateau State to continue giving maximum support to the agency and the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang for better governance.
