The Director of Migration Studies at the University of Abuja, also known as Yakubu Gowon University, Professor Sule Magaji, has been conferred with a Fellowship Award by the Congress for Sustainable Development of Nigeria (CSDN).
Professor Magaji received the honour alongside other eminent Nigerians and distinguished academics during the Congress’s 2026 induction ceremony and the commemoration of World Environment Day. The event, themed “Urbanization and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future,” attracted participants from across the country due to growing concerns about the challenges and realities associated with climate change and environmental degradation.
Responding to the award, Professor Magaji described his induction as a Fellow of the Congress as a recognition of his longstanding contributions to the growth and development of the organisation. He noted that the honour also serves as a call to greater service and commitment in advancing the objectives of the Congress.
While expressing appreciation for the recognition, the Director of Migration Studies emphasized that the fellowship would further motivate him to contribute through research, academic engagement, and advocacy aimed at promoting climate-friendly practices and sustainable development.
According to him, “As the immediate past Director of the University of Abuja Sustainable Development Centre, I contributed significantly to the growth of the Centre. When I assumed office, the Centre had about thirteen students. Within two years, I was able to increase student enrolment to over one thousand.”
Professor Magaji added that the award reflects the Congress’s desire to continue engaging him in key areas such as research, workshops, advocacy, and public awareness initiatives focused on environmental sustainability and climate action.
He further stated that the fellowship would strengthen partnerships and collaborations between him and the Congress, particularly in addressing peace and conflict resolution issues arising from climate change, environmental degradation, and related socio-economic challenges.
The Congress for Sustainable Development of Nigeria continues to promote policies, research, and initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship across the country.
