In what political observers have described as a major breakthrough for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has successfully brokered peace between two of Kano South’s most influential political figures — Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila — following weeks of mounting political tension between their supporters.
The high-level reconciliation meeting, convened behind closed doors by the governor, ended on a positive and emotional note as both leaders publicly embraced reconciliation, forgiveness, and renewed political cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was disclosed in an official statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, who described the intervention as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen political stability and unity across Kano State.
The reconciliation is being viewed as a significant political victory not only for Governor Yusuf but also for the APC leadership in Kano, particularly in Kano South — a region widely regarded as one of the most politically strategic and electorally decisive zones in the state.
Speaking shortly after the meeting, Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, the member representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency, confirmed that all misunderstandings had been amicably resolved.
“The dispute has been settled and we have reunited as one family. We will continue to work together more than ever before,” Rurum declared.
He praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his timely intervention, maturity, and commitment to ensuring peace among party stakeholders, noting that the governor demonstrated uncommon leadership qualities capable of uniting diverse political interests.
On his part, Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, described the disagreement as a temporary misunderstanding fueled by external forces determined to create division within the political family.
“We are one family, and what united us is more than politics. We have family ties and other relationships beyond imagination. What happened was misunderstanding, and we have resolved the differences. It is indeed the devil’s work,” Kawu Sumaila stated emotionally.
The senator further emphasized that unity, mutual respect, and political stability remain more important than individual ambitions, stressing that both camps have now agreed to move forward together in the collective interest of the party and the people of Kano South.
Political analysts believe the reconciliation carries deep implications for the future of Kano politics, especially as political alignments and strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify across the state.
The Chairman of the APC in Kano State, Umar Haruna Doguwa, also commended Governor Yusuf’s peace initiative and called on party supporters to close ranks and focus on strengthening the party structure.
“I would like to thank Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his foresight and quick intervention. This shows that he is truly a leader,” Doguwa said.
The reconciliation meeting attracted several high-profile APC stakeholders, including Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo, APC Ex-Officio Muhammad Jamu, Umar Haruna Doguwa, Senator Kawu Sumaila, and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, among other party loyalists and political associates.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that discussions centered not only on restoring peace between both camps but also on building a united political front capable of consolidating APC’s influence in Kano South ahead of future electoral contests.
Observers note that both Rurum and Kawu Sumaila command massive grassroots support across several local government areas in Kano South, making their unity crucial to the political calculations of both the APC and other emerging blocs in the state.
In a further demonstration of renewed solidarity and political understanding, both leaders jointly invited their supporters to participate in the planned affirmation ceremony of Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila as Kano South senatorial candidate, scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2026.
The latest reconciliation effort is already generating positive reactions among party faithful, community leaders, and political stakeholders who believe the move could help stabilize internal party structures and reduce factional tensions within Kano politics.
For many residents and political observers, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s successful intervention has once again reinforced the importance of dialogue, unity, and strategic leadership in preserving political harmony in one of Northern Nigeria’s most influential states.
