Reasons Why the Kogi Government Should Reconsider the Purported Endorsement of Sam Aro and Support Senator Sunday Karimi for a Second Term

By Rotimi Philip.O

Politics is ultimately about continuity, performance, representation, and the ability of elected leaders to deliver meaningful development to the people they serve. In Kogi West Senatorial District, the debate surrounding the next senatorial election has continued to generate intense political conversations, particularly regarding the reported endorsement of Sam Aro and whether Senator Sunday Karimi deserves another opportunity to complete his legislative agenda.

Many political observers and stakeholders believe that the Kogi State Government should avoid premature political endorsements capable of creating division within the party structure and instead allow a fair political atmosphere where performance and competence become the deciding factors. In this regard, Senator Sunday Karimi has built a compelling case for continuity.

The Value of Legislative Experience

Legislative leadership is not built overnight. Effective representation in the National Assembly requires time, networking, policy understanding, committee influence, and institutional relationships that can only be developed through experience.

Senator Sunday Karimi has spent his current tenure building relationships within the Senate and positioning Kogi West for greater federal attention. Replacing such experience midway through ongoing legislative efforts may weaken the district’s influence at the national level.

A second term would allow Karimi to consolidate ongoing projects, complete unfinished initiatives, and strengthen Kogi West’s bargaining power in federal politics.

Continuity Brings Stability and Development

One of the greatest setbacks in Nigerian politics is the culture of abandoning projects and policy directions whenever leadership changes. Continuity often creates the environment needed for long-term development.

Supporters of Senator Karimi argue that his ongoing interventions in infrastructure, youth empowerment, constituency outreach, and federal engagement deserve time to mature. They believe a second term would provide the stability needed to expand these efforts and deepen their impact across Kogi West.

Political stability within the ruling structure is also essential. Premature endorsements and political impositions frequently create avoidable internal crises that weaken party unity ahead of major elections.

Avoiding Internal Party Division

The reported endorsement of Sam Aro, whether formal or informal, has already generated conversations among party loyalists and grassroots supporters who believe that the political process should remain open and competitive.

A healthy democracy thrives when aspirants are allowed to test their popularity through transparent political processes rather than perceived endorsements from powerful interests. Any appearance of favoritism risks alienating loyal party members and creating unnecessary factional tensions.

Allowing Senator Karimi to seek re-election based on his record and popularity would reinforce democratic values and strengthen confidence within the party structure.

Grassroots Connection Matters

One of the strongest arguments in favor of Senator Karimi is his grassroots connection across communities in Kogi West. Political representation is not merely about elite endorsements but about accessibility, visibility, and responsiveness to constituents.

Many supporters believe Karimi has maintained active engagement with local communities and has continued to identify with the needs of ordinary citizens. In a democratic system, the voices of constituents should carry more weight than elite political arrangements.

Kogi West Needs Strong Representation

Kogi West occupies a strategic position in the political and economic structure of Kogi State. The district requires experienced representation capable of attracting federal projects, defending regional interests, and influencing national policy conversations.

At a time when competition for federal attention and resources is becoming increasingly intense, many believe that continuity in representation offers Kogi West a stronger advantage than restarting with entirely new leadership.

A Call for Fairness and Political Maturity

Rather than encouraging division through perceived endorsements, the Kogi State Government should prioritize fairness, internal democracy, and political maturity.

If Senator Sunday Karimi has not underperformed, then democratic principles suggest he should be given the opportunity to seek the mandate of the people for a second term. Ultimately, the electorate—not political speculation or early endorsements—should decide who best represents the interests of Kogi West.

The future of Kogi West should be determined through open participation, performance assessment, and the collective will of the people. Supporting continuity where there is visible experience and ongoing development may ultimately serve the district better than abrupt political replacement.

Conclusion

Senator Sunday Karimi’s supporters believe that continuity, legislative experience, and political stability make a strong case for his second-term ambition. They argue that Kogi West stands to benefit more from consolidating existing representation than from politically motivated transitions.

As the political process unfolds, the Kogi State Government has an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to democratic fairness by avoiding premature endorsements and allowing the people to freely determine their preferred candidate.

In the end, democracy works best when performance, competence, and public trust remain the true basis for political advancement.
