Rep. Leke Abejide’s Motion Spurs Federal Response on Kabba–Egbe Road Reconstruction

Abuja, Nigeria.

A motion moved by Leke Abejide, member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has prompted official responses from key stakeholders regarding the reconstruction of the Kabba–Egbe Road.

The motion, which highlighted the deteriorating condition of the highway and its impact on communities, security, and economic activities in Kogi West, called for urgent intervention through a specially designed road construction model.

In response to the resolution transmitted through the National Assembly of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Works acknowledged receipt of the communication and outlined the government’s position on the project.

According to the Ministry, the reconstruction of the Ilorin–Omuaran–Kabba–Obajana Road corridor, which includes the Egbe–Kabba section in Kogi State, had earlier been awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited in 2013. The contract, initially valued at over ₦8.2 billion, was later augmented in 2018 to approximately ₦43.49 billion to accommodate additional work on the project.

The Ministry further stated that the project has recently been rescoped into Phase I and Phase II at a revised cost of about ₦25.87 billion. The current scope prioritizes the repair of critically failed sections of the road within available resources under the 2024 and 2025 Appropriations, as well as Sukuk funding provisions, while Phase II will proceed when additional funds become available.

The Ministry also noted that limited budgetary allocations under the 2026 estimates pose constraints for immediate full reconstruction and concessioning of the Kabba–Egbe Road to a private operator.

Meanwhile, Mangal Industries Limited, a major industrial operator located along the Kabba–Egbe corridor, acknowledged the resolution of the House and the concerns raised regarding the road’s condition and its broader implications for local communities and economic activities in Kogi West.

The company clarified that it maintains a dedicated parking facility for its fleet and stated that trucks causing traffic congestion along the highway are not affiliated with its operations. It added that the firm is currently expanding its trailer park to accommodate future growth and further reduce roadside parking while enhancing road safety.

Mangal Industries also expressed appreciation to the National Assembly for its attention to the issue and assured continued cooperation as efforts continue toward improving the critical transport corridor.

Observers say the motion underscores Rep. Abejide’s continued legislative push to address infrastructure challenges affecting mobility, commerce, and development across Yagba Federal Constituency and the wider Kogi West Senatorial District.
