In a significant political realignment that signals a shift in Kano State’s political landscape, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and a respected statesman, has officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The declaration was made during a landmark political gathering at his residence in Kano, where party stakeholders, loyalists, and supporters from Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya Federal Constituency convened in large numbers.
In a passionate and inspiring address, Rt. Hon. Rurum commended the leadership of the APC across all levels, especially within his constituency, and described the party as the most progressive and inclusive political platform in Africa. He welcomed the wave of defectors who joined him in making the switch to the APC, acknowledging their courage and commitment to charting a new course for the development of their communities.
“This decision is rooted in our desire for unity, development, and the need to belong to a party that truly represents the interests of the people,” Hon. Rurum stated. “The APC is not just a party; it is a movement. It is a family built on the foundation of truth, loyalty, integrity, and collective progress. Today, we take a bold step towards building a better future for our people.”
Rurum further praised the leadership of the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, highlighting his role in uniting the party and transforming it into a home for all. He described Dr. Ganduje as a “pillar of unity” whose leadership has restored faith in party politics and ensured inclusiveness at all levels.
Taking a swipe at his former party leader and NNPP Presidential Candidate, Senator Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rt. Hon. Rurum accused him of misleading his supporters for personal and political gain. He warned that such self-centered politics poses a threat to Kano’s political maturity and Nigeria’s democratic future. “It is disappointing how Engr. Kwankwaso has continued to exploit his followers without offering a clear direction. Leadership should be about service, not selfish ambition,” he declared.
The gathering also served as a rallying point for strengthening the APC’s grassroots structure. Rurum called on all members of the APC in Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya to remain law-abiding and committed to the principles of the party. He emphasized that there is no division within the APC, stating, “There is no old APC or new APC. What we have is one united, indivisible family that is committed to the same goal: serving the people and securing a better future.”
Leaders of the APC at the constituency and state levels welcomed Rurum and his supporters with open arms, assuring them of equal opportunities and full integration into the party. They reiterated the APC’s readiness to embrace new members and work collectively toward winning future elections and delivering good governance.
The response from the grassroots was overwhelmingly positive. Community elders, youth groups, women organizations, and political stakeholders expressed their admiration for Rurum’s decision and leadership. They assured him of their support and praised his consistent commitment to the development of the Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya constituency.
One elder from Rano stated, “Rurum has always been our voice, and today he has shown once again that he stands for the people. We are proud to follow him into the APC, a party that respects our values and gives us hope.”
In his closing remarks, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum reaffirmed his dedication to the progress of his people and the strengthening of the APC in Kano State. “This is a defining moment for our constituency and our party. The APC remains the beacon of hope not just for Kano, but for Nigeria. Let us walk together, build together, and succeed together,” he concluded.
This moment marks the beginning of a new political era in Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya — one defined by unity, purpose, and the collective will to build a stronger APC and a better future for all.
