SENATOR KARIMI MOVES MOTION TO REVIEW WAEC CURRICULUM CHANGE
Abuja – Senator Sunday Steve Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has moved a motion at the National Assembly urging the Federal Ministry of Education and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to review their policy on the new curriculum for secondary schools.
The motion, described as “Urgent National Importance”, seeks to allow secondary school pupils adequate preparation before examination, citing Sections 14(2)(b) and 18 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
Senator Karimi argued that the new guidelines, which remove subjects like Computer Studies and Civic Education from WAEC, would lead to mass failure among students, as they would be made to sit for exams they were not prepared for.
He proposed that the current Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) students, who are to write the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in May/June 2026, be excluded from the new guideline, and that implementation begin with the current SS1 students, who will write WAEC SSCE in the 2027/2028 academic session.
The motion received wide support from Senators at Plenary, who also called for an investigation into the policy.
