Port Harcourt, Rivers State – In a proactive move to boost Nigeria’s agricultural productivity and ensure food security, Senator Sulaiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila OFR, the distinguished Senate Chairman on Downstream Petroleum and representative of Kano South Senatorial District, led an official delegation to Indorama Eleme & Chemicals Company in Port Harcourt.
The visit was primarily focused on addressing the critical issue of fertilizer affordability and availability for Nigerian farmers. Recognizing the vital role that fertilizers play in enhancing crop yields and supporting the country’s solid mineral sector, Senator Sumaila and his team engaged with the management of Indorama to seek sustainable solutions that could benefit the agricultural community nationwide.
Upon arrival, the Senate Committee was warmly received by the Chief Executive Officer of Indorama Fertilizer, Mr. Munish Jindal, who expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s agricultural goals.
During the discussions, Senator Sumaila emphasized the urgent need for fertilizer prices to be more accessible to the peasant farmers, who form the backbone of Nigeria’s food production. He called on Indorama to reduce the cost of their fertilizer products to ensure affordability and urged the company to ramp up production capacity to meet the growing demand across the country.
“The purpose of our visit is to request the support of Indorama in making fertilizers affordable and accessible to Nigerian farmers. Food security is paramount, and affordable fertilizers are key to achieving this. We hope the company will work with us to increase production and reduce prices so that our farmers can thrive,” Senator Sulaiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila stated.
In response, Mr. Munish Jindal assured the Senate Committee of Indorama’s dedication to this cause. He pledged to explore avenues for price reduction while scaling up fertilizer production to adequately supply the market.
“We understand the critical importance of affordable fertilizers to Nigerian farmers and the country’s food security. Indorama is committed to working closely with the government and stakeholders to achieve these goals,” said Mr. Jindal.
This visit underlines the Senate Committee’s commitment to improving the solid mineral sector, particularly in the agricultural domain, through strategic partnerships with key industry players like Indorama. The collaborative effort aims to ensure that Nigerian farmers have consistent access to quality fertilizers at reasonable prices, ultimately enhancing agricultural productivity and food sufficiency in the nation.
