In a bold stride toward revitalizing the healthcare infrastructure in Kano South Senatorial District, the Distinguished Senator Representing Kano South, Senator Kawu Sumaila (OFR), has donated modern medical equipment to two key hospitals in the region, Garko General Hospital in Garko Local Government Area and the General Hospital in Albasu Local Government Area.
The equipment, delivered in approximately two full trailer-loads, includes an impressive array of state-of-the-art surgical tools, diagnostic machines, modern hospital beds with brand-new mattresses, patient transport chairs, and a wide variety of essential medical supplies. These resources are poised to significantly enhance both emergency response and routine medical care in the region.
The official handover and commissioning ceremony took place on Thursday, June 5th, 2025. The event, supervised by Senator Kawu Sumaila’s representatives, including Hon. Abdul’azizi Sunusi and other key aides, marked a historic moment for the people of the DAL constituency and Kano South at large.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Hon. Abdul’azizi Sunusi emphasized that the donation reflects Senator Sumaila’s deep commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the senatorial district. He noted that the senator had consulted extensively with health professionals and local administrators to ensure the equipment provided would meet the most pressing needs of the facilities.
“This is not just a donation; it is an investment in the health and future of our people. Senator Sumaila believes that access to quality healthcare should not be a privilege but a right for every citizen, whether in the city or in rural communities like ours,” Hon. Sunusi stated.
The medical directors of both hospitals expressed profound gratitude, noting that the facilities had long been in dire need of modernization. In Garko, Dr. Halima Musa, head of the General Hospital, highlighted how the upgraded equipment would improve maternal and child health services, reduce referrals to overburdened tertiary centers, and ultimately save lives.
In Albasu, the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Idris Bello, said the new diagnostic machines and surgical tools would allow for faster, more accurate diagnoses and a broader range of procedures to be performed locally. “This is the first time in years we are receiving such a comprehensive upgrade. It brings hope to the entire community,” he added.
Community leaders, traditional rulers, and residents turned out in large numbers to witness the event, which also featured prayers, testimonials, and a symbolic ribbon-cutting at both hospitals.
The initiative is part of Senator Sumaila’s broader healthcare intervention strategy for Kano South, which includes training for medical personnel, rural outreach programs, and lobbying for additional federal health resources.
As Kano South continues to face challenges common to many parts of rural Nigeria—limited infrastructure, personnel shortages, and outdated equipment—this gesture stands as a powerful reminder of what responsive and visionary leadership can achieve.
For the people of Garko and Albasu, Thursday, June 5th, will long be remembered not just as the day new machines arrived, but as the beginning of a new chapter in local healthcare delivery.
