SENATOR SUNDAY KARIMI: A MAN OF PEACE PREACHING UNITY AHEAD OF 2027

By Temiloluwa Samuel

In the often-turbulent arena of Nigerian politics, where elections are sometimes defined by division, hate speech and rancour, Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, is choosing a different path.

Three years to the 2027 general elections, the lawmaker has positioned himself not just as a political representative, but as a consistent voice preaching peace, unity and tolerance across party, ethnic and religious lines.

At a recent meeting with government appointees, party stakehokders, youth forums and religious gatherings across Kogi West in the last few months, one message from Senator Karimi has remained constant: _“We are one people. Election will come and go, but Kogi will remain.”_

The Senator, known for his calm disposition and grassroots approach, has repeatedly warned against politics of calumny and ethnic profiling.

“Let us disagree without being enemies,” he told a gathering of youth leaders in Kabba recently. “2027 is not a war. It is an opportunity for us to choose leaders who will continue to develop our land. No political ambition is worth the blood of any Kogite.”

Political observers say this posture is deliberate. Coming from a senatorial district with diverse ethnic groups — Okun, Kankanda, Nupe and others — Karimi understands that sustainable development can only thrive where there is peace.

Since assuming office, Senator Karimi has prioritized constituency engagement that cuts across party lines. His empowerment programs, from agricultural support to education scholarships, have been distributed without regard to political affiliation.

Political analysts from the area in the district describe him as “a unifier.” prominent personalities commended the Senator for “always reminding us that our strength lies in our unity.”
.

With political activities gradually warming up ahead of 2027, many stakeholders say Senator Karimi’s message is timely. Nigeria’s last few election cycles have been marred by fake news, ethnic tension and inflammatory rhetoric.

Karimi insists that leaders must take responsibility for the tone of political discourse.

“We cannot build the Nigeria of our dreams if we destroy each other with our tongues,” he said during a peace rally in Lokoja. “As we approach 2027, let us campaign on issues, on records, and on what we can do for the people. Let the people decide without fear or intimidation.”

His office has also launched a “Peace and Unity Campaign” across the 7 LGAs of Kogi West, engaging women groups, students, and market associations on voter education and non-violence to mobilize massively for the reelection of President Bola Tinubu.

His colleagues in the National Assembly describe him as a bridge-builder who works across party lines to attract development to his people. Back home, constituents point to his accessibility and his refusal to engage in media attacks against opponents.

For many in Kogi West, Senator Sunday Karimi represents what politics should be — service, not strife.

As the countdown to 2027 begins, his message resonates beyond Kogi: that democracy thrives not when we shout the loudest at each other, but when we listen, respect differences, and choose peace.

In the words of the Senator himself:
“Let us keep Kogi peaceful. Let us keep Nigeria united. That is the only way we can all win.”
