The ambitious Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway Project, one of the flagship infrastructure initiatives of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is recording steady and visible progress, particularly in Kebbi State where construction activities on Section 2, Phase 2A and 2B of the dual carriageway are currently underway.
The section under construction, covering a total distance of 258 kilometres, forms a critical segment of the transnational highway designed to link Nigeria’s far northwest to the southwest corridor, stretching from Sokoto State to Badagry in Lagos State. The project, which officially commenced in 2024 following approval by the Federal Executive Council, is projected to span a construction lifespan of approximately four years, with completion targeted for 2028, according to official timelines.
Field reports from Kebbi State indicate that contractors are actively engaged in key construction activities, including extensive earthworks, soil stabilization, priming, reinforcement of road layers, and the gradual installation of modern infrastructure such as solar-powered street lighting. These features are aimed at ensuring durability, improved night-time visibility, and enhanced road safety along the corridor.
Beyond its sheer scale, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway is expected to deliver far-reaching economic and social benefits. Upon completion, the road will significantly reduce travel time across multiple states, lower the cost of transportation for goods and passengers, and improve road safety by decongesting existing routes. For local communities, the project is anticipated to stimulate commerce, create employment opportunities, and open up rural and agrarian areas to larger markets.
The superhighway also holds strategic importance for national integration and regional trade, as it is designed to support the movement of agricultural produce, solid minerals, and manufactured goods, while strengthening Nigeria’s position within the ECOWAS trade corridor.
The project is being implemented under the direct supervision of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engineer David Nweze Umahi, whose leadership has emphasized the delivery of durable, climate-resilient, and cost-effective road infrastructure across the country. Under his watch, strict quality control measures and adherence to engineering standards have been underscored to ensure that the superhighway stands the test of time.
As construction advances, stakeholders and residents along the corridor have expressed optimism that the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway will serve as a lasting legacy of the Renewed Hope Agenda—redefining connectivity, boosting economic growth, and reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to modern infrastructure development.
With steady progress already evident on critical sections, the project continues to signal a bold step toward transforming Nigeria’s road network and unlocking new opportunities for national development.
