Standing with the People: Ade Oloruntoba Commiserates with Victims of the Kabba Flood Disaster
It is with a deep sense of sorrow and solidarity that I, Ade Oloruntoba, a concerned and committed son of Kabba, extend my heartfelt sympathy to the numerous families and communities affected by the recent flood disaster that swept through Kabba and its surrounding areas.
The flood, which destroyed over 500 homes, ravaged farmlands, damaged churches, and claimed domestic animals, has left many of our people in grief, pain, and uncertainty.
Among the affected are the elderly, vulnerable children, and respected community leaders including our dear High Chief and community elder, Chief Obahunlewo of Idde-Iyah, who watched his life’s belongings swept away while already battling health challenges.
This unfortunate incident is not just a natural occurrence it is a wake-up call to all of us as a community. It reminds us of the urgent need to address climate-related threats and infrastructural inadequacies, while also reinforcing the bonds that hold us together as one people.
As someone who has always held the welfare of Kabba and its people close to heart, I am personally devastated by the scale of this disaster. I stand with every affected family and individual in prayers and solidarity. And I encourage all Kabba sons and daughters—both at home and abroad—to rise and support the victims during this challenging time. Now is the time to show love, kindness, and commitment to the community that nurtured us.
In the same vein, I urge the local government authorities, Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and relevant national bodies to provide immediate and comprehensive support to those affected. Relief materials, temporary shelter, health support, and infrastructural intervention are urgently needed to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Let us also begin to advocate for long-term solutions, including improved drainage systems, flood-resistant urban planning, environmental education, and coordinated emergency response mechanisms.
May God heal the land, comfort the victims, and strengthen Kabba and its people as we rise from this adversity.
In unity and unwavering commitment,
Ade Oloruntoba
