TRANS-FORCADOS OIL SPILL: Oborevwori’s Visit To Odidi Has Given Hope To Common Man — Edewor
The Director-General of Sheriff Oborevwori: The Hope Of The Common Man, Mr Edewor Okiemute Godspower, has lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his prompt and compassionate visit to Odidi Community in Warri South-West Local Government Area over the devastating Trans-Forcados oil spill, saying the visit has rekindled hope among the common people of Delta State.
Speaking in Warri on Wednesday, Edewor described Governor Oborevwori as a true servant-leader whose prompt response to the environmental disaster has once again proved that his administration is built on empathy, action and genuine concern for the downtrodden.
According to him, the governor’s decision to personally storm the polluted Odidi community on Tuesday for an on-the-spot assessment, rather than sitting in Asaba to receive briefings, shows a governor who feels the pains of his people.
“What Governor Sheriff Oborevwori did yesterday in Odidi is what we call leadership with a human face. For seven months, our people in Odidi and over 216 riverine communities have been crying under the weight of crude oil pollution that destroyed their rivers, killed their fishes and crippled their livelihood. The governor heard them, saw their pain and went there himself,” Edewor said.
He noted that the spill, which emanated from the aged Trans-Forcados pipeline operated by Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited (HEOSL), had risen from an initial 86 affected communities to 216 communities, contaminating water sources and destroying the fishing economy of Warri South-West and Burutu LGAs.
Edewor commended the governor for not only ordering immediate clean-up but for going beyond relief materials to order urgent medical intervention for the people.
He recalled that during the visit, Governor Oborevwori directed the State Commissioner for Health to immediately deploy medical teams to all affected communities to assess residents and determine the health implications of prolonged exposure to the pollution.
The governor had declared: “We have to take this matter seriously. Once you see what is happening, you realise that it is a very big issue. We don’t want our people dying at this time. We cannot afford to lose our focus or waste time. We have to act quickly and decisively.”
Governor Oborevwori, who was accompanied by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, security chiefs including the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Erale, Commander 63 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim Buhari, Commander NNS Delta, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, and other top government officials, also directed Heritage Energy to deploy its own medical team, provide relief materials and fast-track the clean-up exercise.
Edewor said with this singular act, Governor Oborevwori has proven that his M.O.R.E Agenda is not mere political slogan but a practical commitment to the common man in the creeks who had been abandoned for months.
“This visit has given hope to the common man. It has told the fisherman in Odidi, the market woman in Batan, the youth in Forcados that they have a governor who sees them and will not allow them to suffer unnecessarily. This is the true meaning of ‘Ukodo Dey Go Everywhere’,” he added.
He further lauded the governor for approving the construction of a landing jetty and a modern health centre for Odidi community during the visit, describing it as a clear demonstration that the administration listens and acts.
The DG of the Hope Of The Common Man group called on Heritage Energy, NOSDRA and other relevant agencies to comply fully with the governor’s directive for comprehensive clean-up, medical support and compensation for affected families.
He assured that his group will continue to mobilise grassroots support for Governor Oborevwori, stressing that Deltans are seeing the difference between a leader who talks and a leader who acts.
He assured that his group will continue to mobilise grassroots support for Governor Oborevwori, stressing that Deltans are seeing the difference between a leader who merely talks and a leader who listens, responds and acts in the interest of his people, saying that; “Indeed, Sheriff Oborevwori is the Hope of the Common Man”.
