When Political Music Crosses the Line: Why Defamation and Unverified Accusations Threaten Democracy

By Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu Democracy Newsline Northern Bureau Chief. July 22nd, 2026

Opinion

Politics has always been accompanied by music, drama, and public performances. Throughout Nigeria’s democratic journey, musicians and entertainers have played an important role in mobilizing supporters, promoting political parties, and influencing public opinion. Their voices reach millions of people and often shape political narratives more effectively than speeches or campaign advertisements.

Recent developments within political circles, particularly among supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have sparked concerns about the increasing use of music and social media as platforms for personal attacks instead of constructive political engagement. Rather than promoting unity, policy debates, and democratic values, some online political content has become dominated by insults, character assassination, and highly inflammatory language.

One of the most disturbing trends is the use of serious criminal allegations in songs, videos, or online campaigns against political figures without presenting verified evidence or relying on findings by competent authorities or the courts. Allegations involving terrorism or terrorism financing are among the gravest accusations that can be made against any individual. Such claims should never become tools of political rivalry or entertainment.

In recent public discussions surrounding online content involving supporters of Senator DSP Dr. Barau I. Jibrin, the debate has highlighted a broader issue that extends beyond one individual. Whether directed at Senator Barau or any other politician, unverified accusations can damage reputations, deepen political divisions, and undermine public confidence in democratic institutions. Public opinion should never replace due process or the rule of law.

Political criticism is both legitimate and necessary in every democracy. Citizens, artists, and entertainers have every right to question government policies, criticize elected officials, and express their political preferences. But there is a clear distinction between criticizing public performance and making unproven allegations that attack an individual’s character or criminally implicate them without evidence.

Nigeria has witnessed similar controversies in the past, where political songs have generated heated debates and targeted prominent public figures. While such performances may entertain supporters, they also carry the potential to normalize disrespect, deepen hostility, and encourage toxic political culture. When political music becomes a vehicle for humiliation rather than healthy criticism, everyone loses—including democracy itself.

Social media has amplified this challenge. False or misleading content can spread across thousands of users within minutes, often reaching audiences long before facts can be established. Once reputational damage occurs, it can be extremely difficult to reverse, even if later investigations prove the allegations to be unfounded.
The consequences of online defamation and irresponsible political messaging are significant:

1. They damage personal reputations without due process.

2. They fuel political hostility and deepen social divisions.

3. They spread misinformation that misleads the public.

4. They may expose individuals to legal consequences under defamation and cybercrime laws.

5. They diminish the positive role that music and creative expression should play in promoting peace and national development.

Artists occupy a respected place in society. Their influence should be used to educate, inspire, and encourage responsible civic participation rather than inflame tensions. Political loyalty should never justify language that undermines another person’s dignity or presumes criminal guilt without evidence.

Likewise, political supporters should remember that disagreement is an essential feature of democracy. Competing ideas should be challenged with facts, reasoned arguments, and respectful debate—not with insults, fabricated narratives, or unverified accusations.

Security agencies and relevant regulatory institutions also have an important role to play. Where credible complaints of online defamation or the deliberate spread of false information arise, authorities should investigate in accordance with the law while respecting constitutional rights, including freedom of expression and due process.

Ultimately, Nigeria’s democracy will be strengthened not by louder insults but by stronger institutions, responsible public discourse, and greater respect for truth. Political music can remain a powerful force for civic engagement, but it should never become a weapon for destroying reputations through allegations that have not been established by evidence.

The future of democratic politics depends not only on the leaders we elect but also on the standards we uphold in our public conversations. Every artist, political supporter, and social media user has a responsibility to ensure that freedom of expression is exercised with honesty, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.
