TOYIN ADEBAYO, ABUJA
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr Nyesom Wike, has vowed to bolster security measures and advance infrastructure development for residents of the federal capital, Abuja.
Wike’s commitment came to light during a press briefing held after a closed-door session with Senators at the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday.
The session, convened by the Senate, saw the Minister and the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, addressing lawmakers on the strategies in place to ensure the safety of FCT residents.
Expressing satisfaction with the outcomes of the meeting, Wike affirmed that Senators acknowledged a substantial improvement in security within the FCT.
“I am glad they are all happy with what we have done, what we are going to be doing, and they provided some suggestions on ways forward,” said Wike.
Highlighting forthcoming initiatives, Wike emphasized, “What is important is what the FCT should expect from now. I will say improved security, more infrastructure. You can see what is going on in the FCT. It has been turned into a construction site.”
Moreover, Wike pointed out significant administrative advancements within the FCT, stating, “There are new things in the FCT, and the residents are happy.”
Acknowledging the inevitability of some level of crime in society, Wike stressed the importance of minimizing insecurity.
Regarding recent kidnapping incidents, Wike commented, “Most of the kidnapping stories you hear, some of them are stage-managed by people. There are some internal arrangements.”
In response to these threats, Wike assured, “What we can do is to ensure that the person that is kidnapped is released.”
Furthermore, the Minister disclosed the apprehension of two notorious kidnappers operating in the FCT, attributing their arrest to the decline in kidnapping incidents in Abuja.
While acknowledging room for improvement, Wike emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance security and serve the community. “We are not saying we have gotten to where we want to be, but we are doing a lot and people should acknowledge that what used to be is not what we are seeing now,” he stated.
In conclusion, Wike reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding residents. “We will continue to do our best to ensure that we provide the best to our people. We cannot give you the assurance that there will be no form of criminality, nobody can do that, as long as we are humans,” he affirmed.
