Workers in Plateau State Capital Protest Insecurity
By Peter Azi
Jos – Workers in Plateau State capital, Jos, took to the streets yesterday, bringing activities to a standstill as they protested the rising insecurity in the country.
The workers, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Civil Liberty Organisations, marched to the Plateau State House of Assembly and the Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, to deliver letters of protest and demands to the government.
The workers, who gathered from 8am, waved placards with inscriptions such as “This Blood Must Stop Now”, “Justice for the Victims”, and “Rise up Now Nigerians”. They were led by NLC Chairman in the state, Comrade Eugene Manji, and Leader of the Civil Liberty Organisations, Comrade Steve Aluko, among others.
The protesters, who included members of NUT, NULGE, PASAN, SSANU, NUJ, NASU, NULGE, and ASUU, expressed frustration with the insecurity in the state, citing recent attacks and killings in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
They also lamented the government’s inability to relocate internally displaced persons to their ancestral homes and the closure of schools, which they said was a setback to education.
The workers’ leaders met with the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel, who assured them of the Assembly’s support.
The Speaker revealed that one of the lawmakers, the member representing Pankshin South, was a victim of insecurity, having been kidnapped at his residence earlier this year.
The workers also presented their demands to the Governor, warning that if the situation was not addressed, they would shut down the country without notice.
