Afizere Nation Celebrates Unveiling of Asharwa Dancer Statue

The Afizere people in Plateau State marked a significant milestone on September 12, 2025, with the unveiling of a statue of the Asharwa dancer at the International Jos Museum. The event drew large numbers of Afizere nationals, who gathered to celebrate their rich cultural heritage.
The Asharwa dancers are renowned for their exceptional dancing skills and have represented Nigeria on several international platforms.
In recognition of their cultural significance, the Federal Government of Nigeria featured their image on the ₦100 note.
Hon. Markus Nyam Huiseni, Executive Chairman of Jos East Local Government Area, described the unveiling as a wonderful achievement for the Afizere nation. He pledged to restructure the Palace of Agwom Izere at the museum and urged the youth to plan for their future.
While Abok Ayuba, Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, congratulated the Afizere people and advised them to keep politics out of their cultural associations.
Mr. Linus Kasai, Curator of the Jos Museum, praised the Afizere people’s cultural significance, highlighting their celebrated flutes and prominent dance.
The event was attended by notable figures, including: Engineer Yakubu Ashom, National President of Afizere Cultural and Community Development Association (ACCDA), Hon. Elijah Azi Itsegok, PDP Chairman of Jos North Local Government Area.
