Akpabio’s Steady Hand Strengthens Senate, Deepens Nigeria’s Democracy — Group
A civil society organisation, the Volunteer Media Advocacy for Accountable Leadership (VMAAL), has commended the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for what it described as exemplary leadership and an unwavering commitment to the growth of democratic governance in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its National National Director, Mobilization, Joseph Ezejiegu the group praised Akpabio for providing a stabilising and inclusive leadership at the National Assembly, noting that his approach has enhanced legislative harmony and strengthened democratic institutions.
According to the statement, Akpabio’s tenure as Senate President has been marked by respect for the rule of law, openness to diverse opinions, and a firm belief in dialogue as a tool for resolving political differences.
“Senator Godswill Akpabio has consistently demonstrated rare leadership qualities anchored on experience, patriotism, and deep respect for democratic values,” the statement read. “Under his watch, the Senate has continued to play its constitutional role with maturity, balancing robust debates with national interest.”
VMAAL noted that Akpabio’s ability to manage differing political tendencies within the Red Chamber has helped to foster unity and legislative productivity, while ensuring that democracy is not undermined by partisanship or personal interests.
The group further described the Senate President as a firm believer in democratic growth, adding that his leadership style encourages institutional independence, transparency, and cooperation among the arms of government.
“Democracy thrives where leaders place national stability above personal ambition. Senator Akpabio has shown clear love for democracy by promoting consensus-building and legislative discipline,” Sir Augustine Aminu stated.
VMAAL urged lawmakers to continue supporting the Senate President’s leadership, stressing that strong and principled legislative leadership remains critical to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation and overall development.
