Anti-Human Trafficking Day: Mama Center, Blue North Foundation Storms Kabusa For Sensitisation.

Ahiaba Douglas,Abuja

As Nigeria prepares to join the rest of the world in commemorating the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30, the Mothers and Marginalized Advocacy Center (Mama Center), in partnership with the Blue North Foundation, has organized a public enlightenment and sensitization symposium in Kabusa District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The symposium, held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, with the theme “Integrated Health, Protection, Anti-Human Trafficking and Gender-Based Violence Intervention,” was aimed at raising awareness among residents on the dangers of human trafficking, gender-based violence, and other forms of exploitation.

Speaking exclusively with our correspondent, the Executive Director of the Mothers and Marginalized Advocacy Center, Dr. Chioma Kanu, said the symposium was designed to strengthen advocacy and public awareness against human trafficking and other social vices that have become prevalent in parts of the FCT, particularly Kabusa.

According to her, Kabusa was selected for the awareness campaign because it has been identified as one of the flashpoints for recurring cases of human trafficking, where traffickers and their collaborators perceive the community as a safe haven for their illicit activities.
Dr. Kanu urged participants, especially parents and guardians, to remain vigilant and reject enticing job offers made to their children by human trafficking syndicates. She warned that such promises are often deceptive and are intended for economic and, in many cases, sexual exploitation.

She identified poverty, inequality, and ignorance as major factors that increase people’s vulnerability to human trafficking. She reaffirmed the Mama Center’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons through various empowerment initiatives designed to build resilience and promote self-reliance.

The Executive Director further explained that, beyond advocacy and awareness campaigns, the organization provides humanitarian support to vulnerable individuals as part of its preventive and protective interventions against human traffickers and their enablers.
She also called on parents and guardians to disregard unrealistic promises made by traffickers and instead embrace opportunities for economic empowerment through skills acquisition programmes that can improve their livelihoods.

Dr. Kanu encouraged participants to take advantage of the Federal Government’s free basic education policy by enrolling their children in primary school, noting that education remains a vital tool for combating illiteracy, ignorance, and the vulnerabilities that expose children to trafficking.

As part of the organization’s humanitarian intervention, she announced that free medical services and medications would be provided to participants during the programme to help address their immediate healthcare needs.

The symposium forms part of activities leading up to the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, reinforcing the need for sustained community engagement, public awareness, and collective action to eliminate human trafficking and protect vulnerable populations.
