The Kano State Government has assured residents that the prolonged tussle surrounding the Kano Emirate will soon be resolved amicably, following sustained consultations, legal processes, and renewed commitment to dialogue by the state administration.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, gave this assurance on Thursday while briefing journalists in Kano, stating that concrete measures had been put in place to restore lasting peace and stability across the state.
According to the commissioner, the government remains fully conscious of the sensitivity of traditional institutions in Kano and is determined to ensure that the emirate issue does not escalate into a crisis capable of undermining social harmony or governance. “Our approach is guided strictly by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interest of the people of Kano State,” Mr. Waiya said.
The current emirate dispute has its roots in reforms introduced by successive administrations, which altered the traditional structure of the Kano Emirate. The creation of additional emirates, subsequent reversals, and reinstatements of traditional authority have over the years generated legal, political, and social controversies.
Supporters of reform argue that restructuring the emirate system promotes administrative efficiency and grassroots development, while critics insist it undermines centuries-old traditions and the historical authority of the Kano Emirate.
These competing perspectives eventually spilled into the courts, with various parties seeking judicial interpretation of the legality of government actions affecting the emirate structure and leadership.
Court Stands on the Matter
The commissioner noted that the state government has consistently complied with court orders and remains committed to allowing the judiciary to determine all legal questions arising from the dispute.
Multiple cases related to the emirate tussle are understood to be at different stages within the judicial system, including interlocutory rulings, injunctions, and appeals. The government, Mr. Waiya stressed, has refrained from taking any action that would amount to contempt of court.
“We respect the courts and will continue to respect the courts. Whatever final decisions are reached through due process will be implemented in good faith,” he said.
He added that beyond the legal route, the government is also engaging respected traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to ensure reconciliation and mutual understanding.
On the recent defection of Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the commissioner described the move as a strategic political development expected to yield tangible benefits for the state.
“The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, we expect more support in critical sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare,” Mr. Waiya said.
He assured residents that the alignment would translate into increased dividends of democracy and accelerated development across urban and rural communities.
Deputy Governor’s Position
Addressing concerns over the political future of the Deputy Governor, who has not defected alongside the governor, Mr. Waiya clarified that the decision remains a personal one.
“It is entirely up to the deputy governor to decide whether to continue working with the governor within the new political arrangement or choose a different path. Government business continues uninterrupted,” he stated.
Call for Calm and Unity
The commissioner urged Kano residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of government efforts, emphasising that peace and unity remain the administration’s top priorities.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, inclusive governance, and the protection of Kano’s rich cultural heritage, assuring that the interests of the people would always remain paramount.
“Our focus is development, peace, and good governance. Kano will emerge stronger from this process,” he concluded.
