The Enyiogugu Welfare and Development Union (EWDU), a socio-cultural association representing a segment of indigenous Imo State residents in the Federal Capital Territory, held its maiden Cultural Day and Award Ceremony on Saturday, November 8, 2025, in Abuja.
The event, staged at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, showcased a vibrant display of cultural performances, goodwill messages, and communal celebrations. It also featured a historical narration of the origins of the Enyiogugu people, reaffirming the union’s commitment to unity, member welfare, and the continuous development of their home community.
Speaking exclusively to journalists at the ceremony, Deputy Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Emmanuel Njoku, expressed deep satisfaction with the initiative, describing it as a powerful expression of identity and pride for the Enyiogugu people.
“It’s a very laudable event. I think it’s the first of its kind. I never expected such a crowd, and learning about how Enyiogugu started was an eye-opener for me. It’s truly laudable,” he said.
Njoku noted that the gathering broadened his understanding of aspects of the community’s history he had not previously known, further underscoring the value of cultural events in preserving heritage.
He congratulated all sons and daughters of Enyiogugu in the FCT for their support and cooperation, which he said contributed significantly to the success of the cultural celebration. He also commended the impressive turnout and the enthusiasm displayed by attendees.
The Customs Chief urged members of the union to remain united and steadfast in their collective aspirations. He assured that future editions of the Cultural Day would feature more innovations, including the participation of friends of the Enyiogugu community, to further showcase its rich cultural heritage.
