The recent floods in Kebbi State have had a devastating impact, with over 329,000 houses destroyed and 858,000 hectares of farmlands washed away.
These farmlands contained vital crops like rice, millet, sorghum, and beans. The situation, as reported by Kebbi State’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Birnin Kebbi, has overwhelmed the state’s capacity to respond adequately despite the government’s efforts.
In addition to the destruction of property and crops, lives have been lost, with casualties reported in several local government areas, including Ngaski, Maiyama, Kalgo, Jega, and Birnin Kebbi. The Commissioner has called for urgent assistance to help resettle the affected populations and restore the state’s agricultural capacity. There is a looming food security crisis unless urgent interventions are made.
The state government is planning to provide farmers with improved seeds and agricultural inputs to help them return to cultivation. However, more external support is required to mitigate the damage and prevent further suffering. The Commissioner also mentioned his disappointment that federal lawmakers from Kebbi have yet to visit the affected areas or offer support.
In a final remark, the government warned that it would take decisive action to relocate communities in flood-prone areas to safer grounds to avoid further casualties.
