The Kano State government, under the leadership of Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reiterated that the ultimate deadline for the recertification of titled land documents remains January 31, 2025. This deadline was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Hon. Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar, during a press conference held yesterday at the ministry’s headquarters.
Speaking to journalists, the commissioner urged all landowners who have not yet recertified their documents to act swiftly to meet the deadline. “This exercise is vital for protecting and securing land-related properties,” he emphasized. He also warned that failure to comply could result in unpleasant experiences with the ministry.
The commissioner revealed that the response to the recertification initiative has been encouraging, with over one million interactions recorded so far. These interactions include applications for name changes, title conversions, and actual recertification submissions. “We are proud to announce that over one million distinct recertification-related transactions have been processed, and we are still counting,” he said.
To further enhance the state’s land management system, Hon. Abduljabbar announced the ministry’s plan to introduce a new land order, including the implementation of sectional titling. This initiative, he explained, would ease the process of owning properties in business conglomerates, housing estates, plazas, blocks of flats, and markets. Additionally, it is expected to boost the state’s internally generated revenue.
The commissioner expressed gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support of the ministry’s initiatives, which have enabled it to achieve significant milestones in serving the people of Kano State.
It may be recalled that the recertification process was officially flagged off on November 25, 2024. Since then, the ministry has achieved remarkable progress, including the recertification of over 2,000 Certificates of Occupancy (CofOs). Additionally, the processing of Systematic Land Title Registration documents has commenced, enabling more landowners to obtain regular CofOs.
Landowners in Kano State are therefore urged to utilize the remaining time before the January 31, 2025, deadline to recertify their documents and avoid potential penalties.
