“Knock Me If I Am Off the Track” – Festus Keyamo

By Ahiaba Douglas – Abuja

The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, has affirmed his openness to media criticism and scrutiny—provided such criticism is constructive.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the staff of Democracy Newsline Newspaper, led by its Publisher, Chief  Olugbemi Femi,  Keyamo stated that as a public servant, constant engagement with the media is essential.

He emphasized that his actions remain subject to public evaluation, especially by the media.

The Minister further noted that he has never viewed the media as adversaries.

According to him, his background in activism instilled in him the belief that the media plays a critical role in ensuring societal accountability and good governance.

He described media practitioners as “partners in progress” whose work contributes significantly to democratic development.

The Honourable Minister made these remarks while receiving the Minister of the Year Award at his office in the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.

The award was initially scheduled to be presented at the 15th Annual Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony, themed “The Role of Independent Media Organizations in Promoting Participatory Democracy and Good Governance in Nigeria,” held on August 26, 2025 by Democracy Newsline Newspaper.

However, due to national engagements, the formal presentation was postponed.

“If you hear anything about me, you can say it. But my appeal is this—also give me the opportunity to explain my own side of the story. You should feel free to knock me if I am off the track,” the Minister stated.

Expressing appreciation for the recognition, Keyamo described awards as evidence of consistent service to the public and a reflection of one’s commitment to meeting the needs and aspirations of the people.

“I have received several awards, and whenever I’m given one, I feel happy because it shows I am still doing the right thing. If they stop coming, then something is wrong. Any award from the media makes me even happier,” he added.

He commended the Democracy Newsline Newspaper team for their dedication to promoting good governance and transparency in the country, stating that such recognitions serve as motivation for more committed and selfless service to the nation.
