Leke Abejide Visits Late Ibrahim Idris’ Family, Mourns Former Kogi Governor as Elder Statesman
Yagba Federal Constituency lawmaker Leke Abejide has visited the family of former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris in Abuja, describing the late leader as an elder statesman whose service left a mark on the state.
ABUJA — Member representing Yagba East, Yagba West and Mopamuro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Leke Abejide, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, following his death at the age of 77.
Abejide visited the late governor’s Abuja residence to commiserate with members of the family, associates and other mourners over the death of the former governor, who governed Kogi State from 2003 to 2012. His death in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2026, has prompted condolences from political leaders and groups across the state.
During the visit, Abejide described the late Ibrahim Idris as an elder statesman and experienced political figure whose years in public service formed an important part of Kogi State’s political history.

The lawmaker said his visit was undertaken on behalf of the people of Yagba Federal Constituency to formally identify with the Idris family at a time of mourning.
According to Abejide, the late governor was a leader who demonstrated affection for the people and remained committed to the development of Kogi State during his years in office.
He also acknowledged the late governor’s service to humanity, noting that the lessons associated with his leadership and political experience would continue to provide useful memories for generations to come.
“I am here on behalf of the people of Yagba Federal Constituency to condole with the family of our departed leader and former Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, from whom, during his lifetime, we all learnt good lessons that will last for generations to come,” Abejide said.
The federal lawmaker urged members of the Idris family, friends and associates of the deceased to draw strength from the life he lived and the service he rendered to the state.
He said that despite the grief occasioned by the former governor’s death, the family could find comfort in the belief that his life was lived in service and that his passing was ultimately subject to the will of Almighty Allah.
“In the moment of our grief, we must remember that God was gracious unto him. So, we still have the opportunity to thank Almighty Allah, no matter how much we grieve over his death. The loss is not only for his family but the entire Kogi State,” he added.
The condolence visit comes amid wider expressions of grief following the death of the former governor. Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has declared three days of mourning in honour of Idris and announced that the late former governor would receive a state burial, with the state government taking responsibility for the burial arrangements.
Alhaji Idris, popularly known as “Ibro,” served as governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He first assumed office in 2003 and continued in office after winning the 2008 governorship re-run, remaining governor until January 2012.
Hon. Abejide concluded his condolence message with prayers for the repose of the former governor’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus and comfort his family, associates and the people of Kogi State.
