Ohanaeze Warns Conspirators Against Tenure Elongation of President General
The apex Igbo sociocultural organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said the proposed tenure extension was a direct assault on the democratic rights of the Rivers State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to produce the next President General.
In a statement issued by the Secretary General of the body, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo raised the alarm that there was a calculated attempt by two Southeast governors who are conspiring to elongate the current tenure of the President General from Imo State by an additional two years, undermining the scheduled Ohanaeze elections set for January 11, 2025.
According to them: “we have received alarming intelligence regarding a calculated attempt by two Southeast governors who are conspiring to elongate the current tenure of the President General from Imo State by an additional two years, undermining the scheduled Ohanaeze elections set for January 11, 2025”.
“This dastardly plot aims to disrupt the orderly transition of leadership as outlined in the 2004 Ohanaeze Constitution, which prescribes a clear framework for succession among the various Igbo states”.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo categorically condemns these isidle machinations as an affront to the democratic principles we hold dear and admonishes any parties involved to desist from such unconstitutional pursuits”.
“In a blatant display of opportunism, these governors seek to impose an illegal and unconstitutional “Doctrine of Necessity” to clandestinely appoint an indigene of Imo State as the next President General”.
“This scheme threatens not only the integrity of our electoral process but also the long-standing trust that has been foundational to our sociocultural unity and governance”.
“The proposed tenure extension, couched in thinly veiled justifications, is a direct assault on the democratic rights of the Rivers State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,to produce the next President General”.
The body noted that the 2025 Ohanaeze Election is sacrosanct, and the process for a smooth transition from Imo State to Rivers State is in motion.
They further urged Ndigbo to remain steadfast and to disregard any proposals for illegitimate tenure extension, stressing that Igbo Nation was prepared for the transition programs that would be announced shortly, which will reflect our collective interests, dignity, and unity
